The trailer looked like fluffy garbage to me. Bullet bending, reluctant hero, CGI car stunts and a secret order? *yawns*
Looks like this may be this year's Transformers with everyone telling me it's awesome, but I can't stomach to watch it.

I haven't read the graphic novel, but the premise of following supervillains rather than heroes seemed interesting. The movie seems to have abandoned that for "The Matrix Ripoff That Came Nine Years Late".

I'm up for any Matrix ripoff as long as it's better than Matrix Reloaded.
Wanted has some positive early reviews in from Variety and Hollywood Reporter.

I saw "Wanted" last night - I liked it a LOT.....comparisons with "The Matrix" are inevitable, but I think it`s a fantastic film in it`s own right. Some of the setpieces are incredible (if a wee bit over-the-top), very VERY enjoyable film.
I`ve never read the original comic, how does the movie hold up in comparison?
Are there any plans for sequels/prequels?

Supposedly they are preparing a sequel, but whether or not it goes forward will depend on how well it opens.

Frankly I think it might struggle a little to find an audience in a summer that has already given us two Marvel Comics superhero films, with The Dark Knight on the horizon and Hellboy II not far off that. In a less packed summer I would have considered going to see this, but at the moment TDK is probably the next and last movie I feel I have to see in the cinema until Quantum of Solace hits in the winter.
I might pick Wanted up on dvd if it gets good reviews.

However, Wanted isn't a typical superhero comic. I doubt most people who know of, or will see, the film are even aware it's based on a graphic novel, so I do not think it'll get lost amongst the various superhero films, because audiences will actually see it as an alternative to comicbook movies.

Granted it's not a costumed-hero flick, but it is still in the action-fantasy genre. It might be more violent than the other films I've mentioned, but it is not a gritty, realistic thiller from what I can see; its teen wish-fulfilment roots are very much in evidence in the trailer, even if they have a more cynical edge than the traditional super-hero fare. People are comparing it to The Matrix rather than, say, Bourne or Die-Hard.

No, I agree- it's definitely got more of a Matrix flair. But it's also very different in style from Iron Man, Hulk, Hellboy, Hancock or Batman. I think general audiences see a large distinction between "superhero" and "action hero". Being Matrixy, like Wanted is, is more of a John Woo shoot em up type genre than costumed do-gooder. It's gonna be much more of a "Oh, that was based on a comic?" type situation with audiences I think.

Fight Club and The Matrix smash into each other in midair in a comic-book extravaganza.
Sometimes you want to listen to a symphony, sometimes you want to listen to a beautifully crafted pop song. But sometimes you want to crank the speakers and bang your head, and that's why God (and Timur Bekmambetov) gave you Wanted.
Working a niche somewhere between the black comedy of Fight Club and the ultrafashionable mayhem of The Matrix, Wanted is an experience that's hard to defend as a whole but mesmerizing in a highway-accident rubbernecking kind of way.
Yeah, I'm seeing this.

I've been looking to this one for a long time. Ratatouille remains my top film of 2007, and I anticipate this one will be excellent, if not quite as good as Ratatouille. From what I've heard, the first forty minutes are pure, unadulterated artistry, and I'm very much looking forward to that section. After that, the film supposedly becomes more commercial/conventional, but it's still supposed to be good.
