This movie was not half bad. Charlize Theron just looks so damn good in close up. I'd see it again just for that.

Hancock has serious problems in its plot structure. It comes off as pretty nonsensical. But the film's first half was very good. It's worth watching once, but it's unfortunate that it couldn't live up fully to it's fresh take on the superhero genre.

A shame to waste such a great idea. Oh, well.
This is pretty much the impression I'm getting as well. It's strange how the marketing campaign seemed to change halfway through from "throwing whales" to "generic hero arc". And I was really looking forward to what appeared to be a Captain movie.

Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar®-nominated director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy). Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman). Along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development--pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones) and protoplasmic mystic Johann--the BPRD will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal. Agreed. If the trailer is any indication, Pan's Labyrith won GDT alot of creative freedom.

I haven't seen the first one, would that preclude seeing the second and understanding what's going on?

Probably not too bad. This one looks like it's starting a whole new storyline, instead of continuing where the first left off.
