EDIT: If Daniel Day-Lewis wins, will this be the first time none of the four "acting" winners are American?

That's a yes.

The real winner of the night: Gary Busey.

Pretty good, if very "Independent Spirit"-y show. Stewart pretty smart; only one really dumb bit (Sid Ganis acting goofy to show the incredible "security measures" involved in...counting pieces of paper); some nice speeches and heartwarming moments...and no awards to make you woof your cookies all over the screen.

Low electricity, high class.

Also, do the Coens even know that they won? They are truly the most inexpressive people in the universe. But good for them. If you're gonna win big at the Oscars, it might as well be for your best movie.

Harrison Ford. Drunk...or brain-damaged?

I'm just happy that Atonement didn't get shut out completely tonight -- I actually thought the film might win for costume or art direction, but the score is beautiful, and definitely deserving. (Also, best use of clickety-clack typewriter keys in any movie since All the President's Men. Seriously.)

Lets face it, they have a bias against ILM. Transformers was far and away the best so far as Visual Effects go..........Episode 1 didn't win back in 2000 either and it was revolutionary in its time. Hollywood politics, they don't like giving anything to to films by Lucas and Bay............At least LOTR won a few years back. tongue
To be fair, TPM lost to The Matrix, which also had revolutionary effects.

Well, as someone once said re Halle Berry's histrionic reaction to her win, the Coens apparently know they didn't invent a cure for cancer.

Lol, to me it seemed like he was thinking, "I can't believe I'm reading this **** frustrated ". He's so unabashedly grumpy, it's great.

Ok, and what the HELL was Daniel Day Lewis talking about? A gilded branch springing forth from the mind of Paul Thomas Anderson?! This was one of the most bat **** insane things I've ever heard anyone say laugh He's a brilliant actor but so nuts.

You know, I gotta say, I absolutely loved Marion Cotillard's performance in La Vie en Rose (she completely deserved the Oscar), but in another sense, the one award I find it hard to give a crap about is that somebody playing Edith Piaf won Best Actress.

One, because I'm tired of showbiz-tragedy biopics anyway; two, because I suspect France makes an Edith Piaf movie every year or two; three, because -- c'mon -- who's the audience for this? Gay Francophiles with working 78-rpm turntables?

(I guess better that than the obligatory Alzheimer's movie, but still...)

I liked TPM and it was beautiful to look at, but The Matrix deserved its win, but I can't believe The Golden Compass won.

Why did it win? I'll say it again. Those polar bears didn't look much better, if at all, than the Coca-Cola bears.

Last year, they did allow POTC 2 to win because there was absolutely no way that they could ignore Davy Jones and get away with it, but there is no question that this has to be either an agenda to promote The Golden Compass or to ignore ILM; especially since ILM did the other two options.

Everything just seems to be about a payday for somebody now.

And as much as I loved POTC 3, Transformers had some of the most complex and photorealistic effects ever created. I normally don't geek out this much about a situation like this, but I am actually PISSED OFF. Every thing is rigged now. Good grief, I don't watch professional or college sports anymore. I guess I need to cross awards shows off of my list as well. Should I even bother voting this year?

I'm glad that Transformers lost because that movie sucked ***** and deserves to lose everything.

Hey, there was nothing "obligatory" about it, or the short story that it's based on.

Actually, I meant "obligatory" more in terms of Oscar-jumpstarting a new trend in Alzheimer's movies (a deluge of them), like Edith Piaf films.

Away From Her was terrific.

The last Alzeheimer's movie was "Iris" and I suppose "The Savages" could also qualify.

Then then the prison camp movie...represented this year by "The Counterfeiters"

The indie comedy...this year "Juno", last year "Little Miss Sunshine"...

I could go on.

Right, forgot about The Savages. On the other hand, Marion Cotillard is an absolutely luscious crumpet, so who cares if the movie is a showbiz-tragedy biopic? More of her in everything, please.

The good news there is, she'll be photographed by Dante Spinotti and Michael Mann next in Public Enemies.
