Why did anyone who is not named Daniel Day Lewis even show up for the best actor part of the show?

And the results are:
(I calculated by the number of wrong guesses. Two of you did conspiciously better than the rest, mainly because you got all the acting awards right, and chose "The Bourne Ultimatum" for at least one of the 3 awards it got, generally got the music awards, and guessed at least one of the shorter films or docs. correctly). The rest of us had trouble. "The Bourne Ultimatium" didn't help (no one got all its awards) and the short films and docs were a mine-field. Nearly everyone got the two male acting awards right; only the winner and placer got all four.
The winner of a week's colours is KissMeImARebel with six wrong guesses.
Congratulations.
Runner-up with seven wrong guesses is dp4m
Well-done.
And the rest:
10 wrong: Jango10, Zaz
11 wrong: Hammurabi, Solojones
12 wrong: Captain_Tycho, Reynar_Tedros
13 wrong: Boba Fett 2001
14 wrong: Coruscant, Yoda's Evil Twin
15 wrong: Lord NoOne
16 wrong: _ _ _ _ _ (luckily he's got other things on his mind)
I shall take myself off to attend to KMIAR's colours and try not to give away a modship while I'm at it.

Soontir-Fel posted: I'm glad that Transformers lost because that movie sucked ***** and deserves to lose everything.
Don't get me wrong. I can understand why some people didn't like Transformers. Personally, I loved it, but I just don't understand the Academy's logic. The category is designed to acknowledge visual effects. Even if a movie, in and of itself, is awful storywise, etc, but it has great special effects, it should be recognized and not fall prey to bias. This was the only category it was nominated for which was appropriate, but I can't believe that they actually think The Golden Compass had better visual effects than Transformers or POTC 3. Something fishy is going on, and it's just a reminder to me of the lack of objectivity that our culture is saturated with nowadays.

The Golden Compass had giant fighting bears, thousands of daemons on screen at the same time, and created a entire fantasy world. I feel pretty good with it winning.

See that's the problem with voting with your head as opposed to your heart. In my heart, I personally felt Bourne deserved to win, for both sound categories at least, but my head said the academy would follow the best picture nominees in those categories. My heart also said Marion Cotillard, but head said Julie Christie.
Ok, so biggest upsets of the night:
Tilda Swinton best supporting actress.....WTH?
Golden Compass Best Visual Effects......definitely belonged to Transformers
Everything else I was pretty much ok with. Elizabeth taking best costumes, another win I didn't see coming but I was ok with. Very sad that the sound editor for Transformers (the dude that has been nominated 20 times now but never won) didn't win. Didn't really like cinematography going to There will be Blood. Diving Bell, Atonement, Jesse James all deserved it over that film.

Three 6 Mafia: 1
Transformers: 0
Nice work, Don Murphy.
I half-expected Ethan Coen to blurt out, "I'm an excellent driver."
Worst Moment of the Night: Listing off the past winners of the Best Director Oscar in chronological order -- "Steven Spielberg! Sam Mendes! Steven Soderbergh! Peter Jackson! Clint Eastwood!" Did 2002 never happen?
I could understand shying away from the subject of Polanski, but if you want to convince people that the Oscars are unpredictable, why ignore one of the only genuine surprises in the history of the Best Director category?
Also:
Why wasn't Brad Renfro in the dead-actor montage? (Roman Polanski was in Rush Hour 3 -- that's not the same as being dead, is it?)

Well, wow, that ended up being one of the most entertaining Oscar shows in a very long time. It had a good pace, only slowing down during the "this is how we vote for the awards" bit and the honorary oscar award (but, damn, for that much work, he deserves it).
Stewart was excellent as host- he brings a real sense of honesty to the position, often expressing what everyone else is thinking (such as his post-voting sarcastic "Wow, that was amazing..." delivery, or pretty much pointing out that the show this year, being the 80th one, is a selfcongratulatory show of selfcongratulations), whereas most other hosts tend to play it safe with only 1 or 2 biting zingers (or, if you're Ellen, 0). And though I don't think he had as many lines this year that will be considered as classic as some of the ones from his first hosting gig ("3 Six Mafia: 1 oscar, martin Scorscee: 0"), he did have some good ones still- "Thank God for teen pregnancy.", "Gadolf Titler.", the Cate Blancett pitt bull, playing Wii Tennis, not to mention his classy move to have the song co-winner come back out to give her speech.
Plenty of other notable or memorable moments though- carell's "Is this being shown in Belgium? OH Sh!", The Rock's Raiders nightmare, Clooney "wearing" his Batman suit, Seth Rogen & Jonah Hill, DDL's knighting, etc.
Great show!
solojones posted: Ok, and what the HELL was Daniel Day Lewis talking about? A gilded branch springing forth from the mind of Paul Thomas Anderson?! This was one of the most bat **** insane things I've ever heard anyone say He's a brilliant actor but so nuts.
Actually, I believe he said "a golden branch springing forth...", referring to the oscar statue.

Leto II posted: OMG! Can't believe Eric Stoltz won Best Supporting Actress.
I can now pretty much figure out who you are when you post on Hollywood Elsewhere...
Leto II posted: The real winner of the night: Gary Busey.
Pretty good, if very "Independent Spirit"-y show. Stewart pretty smart; only one really dumb bit (Sid Ganis acting goofy to show the incredible "security measures" involved in...counting pieces of paper); some nice speeches and heartwarming moments...and no awards to make you woof your cookies all over the screen.
Low electricity, high class.
Also, do the Coens even know that they won? They are truly the most inexpressive people in the universe. But good for them. If you're gonna win big at the Oscars, it might as well be for your best movie.
... but wait, those two comments were said by different people. ARE YOU TWO PEOPLE, LETO?!? IS THIS WHY YOU ARE II?!?
