Gary Jules' version of Tears for Fears Mad World from the Donnie Darko soundtrack is quite possibly the best cover version of any song I've ever heard.

He slowed the tempo and stripped the song back to create a mood more inline with that of the lyrics than the original. It's a brilliant effort.

Maybe so, but after hearing my college radio staion literally play it at least once every hour, I am so darn sick of it, I just can't even tell you.

That cover ruined Christmas for me last year, because it was Christmas no. 1 instead of The Darkness. cry It's not even Christmas-y, it has no business being at the top of the charts at this time of year! *shakes fist agrily* *grumbles* And I bet most of the people that bought the single have (a) never heard the edgy original or (b) seen Donnie Darko. angry

Well, to be honest, The Darkness are rubbish and Mad World was a superb song.

The first album was okay, everything since has made me cringe and put on Mercyful Fate.

Best cover I've heard is Emperor doing Bathory's "A Fine Day To Die"

Normally I'm not a fan of cover songs, but Luther Vandross' cover of the Carpenters' Superstar:

Best. Cover. Ever!

C'mon, under the definition of "souless" in the dictionary, there's a picture of the Carpenters! Likewise, Tina Turner got a hold of Proud Mary (originally by Credence Clearwater Revival?) and kicked long ***!

I prefer Sonic Youth's cover of "Superstar."

Another couple of great ones are the Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder, and Sting's version of (was it Jimi Hendrix?) Little Wing.

The Eagles' "Unplugged" Hotel California and Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" Layla were good "re-imaginings" of their own works, if that counts.

Pearl Jam has some very good covers, I'm really impressed with their covers of The Who's Baba O'Riley, and their cover of Crazy Mary.

Nirvana playing Oh Me, Plateau, and Lake of Fire with Cris and Curt Kirkwood rank up there as well, but I'm also hesitant to call it a true cover.

Rush

Summertime Blues - Great cover of a great song. Especially the intro.

Crossroads - Yet another get cover by Lee, Lifeson, and Peart.

Dream Theatre

The Rover/Achilles Last Stand/The Song Remains The Same Medley - James LaBrie's vocals rival those of the original, and John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy utterly destroy this song (in a good way)

The Big Medley - It's fun trying to name as many songs as you can in this.

Perfect Strangers - Sounds just like the original Deep Purple song, if not better.

Audioslave

Seven Nation Army - Very good cover of the White Stripes song. Chris Cornell is, IMO, a good singer.

The White Stripes

Jolene - Very good song, I didn;t even know this was a cover until a little while ago.

Walking With a Ghost - Better than the Tegan and Sara version. In fact, this is the only version in my mind.

~~~
That's really all I can think of right now.
I agree, Gary Jules makes Mad World into a good song.
Anyway some other good covers:
Eleanor Rigby ~ Ray Charles
All Along the Watchtower ~ Jimi Hendrix
I'm Only Sleeping ~ The Format (a few bands do good covers for this.)
Gary Jules' version of Mad World... left me in tears the first time I heard it. Not in the sense that it's a bad cover(IMO, it's easily one of the best), but because of how haunting and tragic it is cry
I agree The Sundays' cover of "Wild Horses" is pretty darn good... the best song on their second album.
And as for "Little Wing," Sting does a pretty good version of it, although some may say it's too Adult Contemporary-ish.
And Jimi Hendrix, he also does a darn good cover of "Hey Joe."
Darth_Banal posted:
Hope Sandavol's cover of the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses is beautiful.
I like the Sundays' version better. It's incredibly touching.
Has anyone brought up Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of "Little Wing"? Phenomenal stuff.
Some may snicker at this, but a-ha (yes that a-ha, three Norwegian guys from the 80s) does a good cover of "Crying in the Rain."
Crying in the Rain by Whitesnake, you mean?
Motley Crue did a pretty good cover of Black Sabbath's Paranoid. The guitar solos were a slight disappointment, though the rest of it is fantastic. The vocals are definite improvement- Ozzy's not too great a singer.
