It's been a while since I heard it, but Type O Negative's cover of "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Croft is pretty amusing.
I haven't read the entire thread, but has anybody mentioned Echo & the Bunnymen's cover of "People are Strange" by the Doors yet? I thought it was an excellent cover. Or Foo Fighter's cover of "Darling Nikki" by Prince? Another great track.
Question to all: anybody heard Devo's cover of "Head Like a Hole" by NIN? Or maybe AFI's cover of that song instead? I have both, and comparing them both is interesting...

Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal is pretty cool. As somebody already observed, Marilyn Manson's cover of the Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) was brilliantly disturbing.
And let me say again, Luther Vandross cover of the Carpenters' Superstar faaaar surpasses the original.

Aerosmith's cover of Helter Skelter is pretty awesome.
And Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks is one of my five favorite Zep songs, easy.

Can anyone think of a song where the cover version is probably the more definitive version of the song? I'd say You Really Got Me by Van Halen is the closest one I can think of.
Metallica did a pretty good cover of Stone Cold Crazy. The original had a killer riff and pace, but seemed to be struggling to really break out because Freddie took a campy direction with the vocal.

Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower. Most people think of that over Dylan's, as many people have already mentioned in the thread.

I really think the version of Comfortably Numb by Van Morrison is rather weak. It's not as weak as the Band doing the chorus of "Mother" from the 1990 concert, but it comes close.
Sinead O'Connor's VERSES to "Mother", however, were OUTSTANDING. Better than the album, and probably the best performance of the entire event.
I'd also list Trio's version of "After the Goldrush"

Slovak jazzman Peter Lipa recorded a CD, a selection of Beatles songs played in a jazz/blues style, called "Beatles In Blue(s)". It's quite unusual, hearing familiar songs in a completely different style, but it really works well. My favourites are "Every Little Thing", "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Do You Want To Know A Secret". You can listen to audio samples of the songs here (click on the "Vypocut" link next to the songs' titles) ::)

*opens door* "Oh, I'm… oh…" "What is it, Lieutenant Sebastian?" "It's just the Rebels, sir. They're here." "My God, man! Do they want tea?" "No, I think they're after something more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they brought a flag."

Some of my favs:
The Cure's cover of David Bowie's 'Young Americans' and Jimi Henrix's 'Purple Haze.'
Buffalo Tom's cover of 'Hawaiian Baby' by the Spinnanes.
And I heard Matchbox Twenty do great versions of John Lennon's 'Watching the Wheels' and Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time' live.
