Crystal Balls gave me nightmares. That bit with Capac coming into Tintin's room while he's in bed. And you can really feel the summer heat during that thunderstorm. Very atmospheric is what I'm trying to say.

I thought the image with the expedition members in the sanitarium was kind of spooky, too.

Haddock's country squire impression and his antics at the theatre are among my favourite episodes in Tintin. The only thing to say against Crystal Balls is that, of all the 'first' books in duologies, it stands up the least well as a book in its own right. You really do need to read Prisoners next.

Casterman have realised a gorgeous edition of the original cartoon strips for Prisoners with some extra panels. The original version began towards the end of Crystal Balls, with Tintin going to Marlinspike and finding Haddock sunk into depression.

I read "Flight 714"

Definitely a late Tintin, in that there's more emphasis on humour and trouble with the plot. In fact, it was (by mistake) two pages too long, and these pages (which concerned escape from an exploding volcano) were simply omitted without explanation.

The eccentric millionaire was actually based on a real person, Marcel Dassault. His debate with Rastopopulous over who is eviler, is funny, but a bit snide.

And what the hell was the little extraterrestial guy doing there? It was if Herge simply couldn't be bothered to work the plot out, and simply substituted a deus ex machina with a Russian accent. Very Chariot of the Gods, the whole thing.

Tintin on DVD, Awesome. I remember watching the show when it was on TV about ten years ago. Should be cool to see it on DVD with the extras.

There aren't too many extras, Viceroy.

I always liked 714. It's the final showdown between Tintin and Rastapopulous. I always bought the ending when I was young… maybe now though I'd dislike it.

You just like it because they're heading for Australia. grin

Another problem; didn't the whole set-up seem more South American to you?

Set up? You mean the island they were on?

Yes. It's probably the one setting Herge didn't nail.

Does it say where they are flying to Australia from? I can't remember. There are some South American looking statues in the Eastern Pacific.

Still haven't read two of them: "Red Rackham's Treasure" and "The Calculus Affair"

I know Rogue isn't big on "The Calculus Affair", but I love it. It's one of my favourites, and probably one of the most serious.
