The first books were newspaper ones, and they started going towards 'feature length' books, IIRC.

The other thing is that Herge did a lot of research with all of the locations, but the only one that he visited was Japan, I think.

I believe the situation with Spielberg is that he optioned Tintin a long time ago and I think he might have even re-optioned Tintin quite recently, but I've never heard of it going any further than that. Sadly a lot of book filmrights are sold but never become films - although maybe that's not a bad thing with Tintin, given the hash made of the live-action Asterix films. Tintin is a classic - in Belgium, Tintin isn't a children's book series (graphic novels are huge in Belgium and taken very seriously) hence its sometimes very adult jokes (such as Haddock's alcholism) which are often toned down when marketed to the UK and Canada to children.

They should stick with the Cartoons, those were fantastic.

But yeah, they did tone down some things.

Due to repeated recommendations in the "Essentials" thread, I actually read my first Tintin book. It didn't answer my chief question about Tintin before reading any of it, which was: why is Tintin's cowlick on backwards?

"The Blue Lotus" --it seemed to start in the middle, and I had a hard time getting into it.

"The Broken Ear"--I thought this one was considerably better. Lots of humour at the expense of South America. Tintin is not terribly PC. Don't consider that a criticism. Snowy's looks of horror are pretty funny. Nice artwork. Terrific imagination.

Due to my alphabetical recommendation system, Blue Lotus does start in the middle. It's a sequel to Cigars of the Pharaohs. tongue

Herge has some rather PC opinions, before we called it that. Tintin in America has a great satire on Native Americans and the government. But South America is one of his great targets; the Middle East as well.

I found the Land of the Black Gold to be eerily prophetic.

I can't really think of a bad Tintin, especially the comics.

Maybe Castafiore Emerald - bit slow and without a sense of adventure.

The cartoons are pretty good too but the only time we get to see the Captain drink is in Crab with the Golden Claws. Taking out his drinking really took out a lot of the comedy of the series.

I agree, there are some classic moments that were missed.

I can't imagine the Captain without his drinking.

They never showed Tintin drunk either IIRC, either in Broken Ear (he just gets rescued and there's no scene of him drinking with the prison overseer) or in Crab with the Golden Claws when he gets drunk off the fumes from the wine.

Maybe we should have a hosted discussion going through each book and the corresponding cartoon episode

Out of curiosity, has anyone seen the theatrical works based on Tintin?

I believe there was a play based on Castiafore Emereld and a musical based on the Inca duology.

I saw the stage version of Tintin in Tibet while in London - Absolutely fantastic - great production.

I was talking about the translation to cartoon. They took that part out. So basically the only reason Tintin becomes Alcazar's aide is that he was about to be shot, whilst in the book the guns were faulty, he got drunk in the break he had and was shouting 'long live General Alcazar' when the revolutionaries took over the country, causing them to take him to Alcazar.

Yeah. That's an awful one. The only one I really dislike.
