It's a solid way to end the series. Not bad, not great. But there are moments of undeniable adventure and fun.

RE: The Adventures of Tintin
Finally read "Tintin in the Congo".
It's very like "Tintin in America" in that his impressions seem to be influenced by cliches in American films rather than genuine Congolese.
The Congo was terribly exploited by Leopold II of Belgium (at first it wasn't a Belgian colony; he owned it outright, believe it or not) and the people suffered a lot. So the silly cliches grated a good bit, and the slaughtering of wildlife didn't go down well, either.
On the good side, Snowy is a hoot, supplying all of the sidekick role and most of the comic relief. He's a triumph.

Next: "The Land of Black Gold"
The set up is a bit labourious; I had several tries before I actually got into it. But it has some great set pieces: the sand storm in the desert; the sneezing battle; the chase after Abdullah and Muller. And the political stuff, as usual, is both accurate and prophetic. Abdullah is a version of "Red Chief" in the Ransom of same. Haddock shows up in the nick of time, but we never get to hear why, because he's always interrupted when he tries to tell us.
And Haddock is in fine blistering form.

Yes, this is one of the ones where everything is in its right place. There is not much set-up to do; we know the characters, we know what's going to happen, and the only variable is how well it'll be pulled off.

There's an interesting story behind Land of the Black Gold which explains why Haddock is missing for most of the story. I'm hazy on the details, maybe someone else knows the full story? But the gist of it is that Herge started writing it before he created Haddock and I think it was serialised as well but he stopped when the Germans invaded Belgium. He only returned to the story years later -- by which time he had established Haddock as a lead character in the series, so he had to find a way of explaining why Haddock isn't in most of the story.

Well, that explains it. I wondered, because the combination of Abdullah & Haddock is hugely funny.

No; though I did read a book called "The Tintin Companion" which was very interesting.
What was the film about?

Black Gold is one of my favorites. I loved the bit with Haddock not being able to tell Tintin what he's been up to.
The Thompsons going in circles, the sneezing bit, about any scene with Abdullah. Perfection.
I think Secret of the Unicorn is my favorite. Red Rackham isn't a patch on it, if you ask me.

Ah, well, that was the point. I haven't actually seen it yet.
I have it on my desk, though.

Finally read "The Seven Crystal Balls". It's absolutely a great set-up, but now I forget how it exactly played out in "Prisoners of the Sun." I'll have to go back to that one. Damn.

Yeah, I like Crystal Balls better than Prisoners of the Sun. Still, it's one of the better duologys.

Still no luck on getting "Red Rackham", however. Long waiting list.
