Madonna: I never liked that kind of faux-classic style back when it was popular. I hate those '80s fonts and the washed-out look. There was this whole "update the '50s" thing going on back then that has ended up looking pretty gross.

Talking Heads: I think if you came out with that cover on a new album today, it would still look up to date.

The Madonna cover makes me want to slice her throat (ie. hawt). More generally, it does what it's supposed to do, I guess.

The Talking Heads cover is neat but I wouldn't give it a second glance, particularly. I agree though that it has a timelessness that Madonna's lacks.

Rolling Stone:

Self Portrait (1970) – Bob Dylan

Book:

Free (1969) – Free

My opinion:

Free is a bit goofy. And that one star is a little off center.

Self Portrait is easily the most controversial album in Dylan’s discography, compiled of covers and various other trivia, that Dylan either released specifically to alienate people or as a sort of ‘official bootleg’ or both, depending on when you’re talking to him.

The cover is here for one reason; Dylan painted it. Frankly, he should stick to music. It is iconoclastic, but that’s the extent of its virtues.

And why is Freewheelin’ not on this list?

I like "Free". "Self Portrait" reminds me of grade 7 art class.

(Takes second look.) Make that grade three. tongue

Rolling Stone:

Frank's Wild Years (1987) - Tom Waits

Book:

Gamma 2 (1980) - Gamma

Well now, this is surprising. Two really good covers in one post. I like the Waits cover for its color and the way the skyline meets the accordian.

The Gamma cover is pretty cool as well (though you can't help but be reminded of Spinal Tap's Shark Sandwich). I particularly like the water hose that has been sliced in two by one of the fins.

They are both better than average, without being, I think, really memorable.

Rolling Stone:

The Parkerilla (1978) - Graham Parker

Book:

Goodbye Jumbo (1990) - World Party

My opinion:

So, it's a sideways picture of a guy imitating an ape hiding from leopards or something and a picture of a guy wearing a gas mask and elephant ears.

Right. Sure.

Well, he does look a bit simian, but I thought it was a semi-Dracula pose.

The elephant with the gas mask? Is strange.

Wow, another 2 terrible covers. What a surprise. Seriously, what were the people who made these lists smoking?

Rolling Stone:

Daydream Nation (1988) - Sonic Youth

Book:

Hank Mobley (1957) - Hank Mobley

My opinion:

I can't seem to find a copy of the Mobley cover online; can't even remember it from the book.

I actually like the Sonic Youth cover: a title text you can actually read, a simple, yet evocative picture . . . wow, simplicity, what a concept.

The SY one I like because the music actually sounds like the picture looks.

This is probably the Hank Mobley (Blue Note 1568 released 6/23/57):

Looks okay to me.

I like the Sonic Youth cover, too. Especially the off-centredness; nice touch.

I'm having a hard time seeing the details of the other one.

Rolling Stone:

In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) – King Crimson

Book:

Hapshah & Coloured Coat (1999) – Hapshah & Coloured Coat

My opinion:

Crappy image on the second one; best I could find with Google.

The first one is, well, unique is as charitable as I’m willing to be.

It's kind of hard to tell what the second one actually looks like, the image isn't big enough, and I can't seem to enlarge it...

The first one is a caricature. I'm not that fond of looking at people's tonsils.
