I like both of those, though it is hard to see the second one. That one reminds me of one of those MAD magazine fold-ins. I like the King Crimson one's colors and close focus on one subject. I love covers that use the whole space for the image without adding words or a logo; they stand out on the shelves, and that's most of the game right there. If you can get someone to pick it up to see what it is, you're doing well.

Rolling Stone:

X (1980) - Los Angeles

Book:

The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975) - Joni Mitchell

Well, the Mitchell cover is just weird.

But I actually really like the X cover. Stark, simple, off center and instantly arresting. Kudos; for the first time in ages, it seems, we’ve finally found another one worthy of the top 100.

The Joni Mitchell one is just too fey, both in title and illustration.

The "X" one is very good.

Aye, the first one is good. I really love covers like that...

Rolling Stone:

The Smiths (1984) - The Smiths

Book:

Home Is In Your Head (1991) - His Name is Alive

My Opinion

The Smiths cover is apparently a still from an Andy Warhol film. That does not make it art, I'm afraid.

The other cover, I am ambivalent about. I like the yellow and purple text and the dark colors. I don't care for the, uh, squid thing.

Andy Warhol movies are even worse than the stills...

Rolling Stone:

50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong (1959) - Elvis Presley

Book:

Horses (1975) - Patti Smith

I rather like both of these. The Elvis one is striking and visually interesting. The off balance placement of the Elvis's are cool and the white and gold make for a great contrast.

And am I crazy or does it seem to hark back to Magritte's Golconda:

The Smith cover is cool in a different way. Apparently much was made of deglaming the singer . . . hard to tell on CD (and even harder on the image above), but apparently she even has a slight mustache . . . That doesn't really do much for me, but I like the color and the pose.

Anyway, I like both of these, the Elvis one a bit more than the Smith one.

The infamous gold lame tuxedo...yes, it's a good image. The other is, too, though she could hardly be more androgynous...

Rolling Stone:

Ramones (1976) - Ramones

Book:

How to Be a Zillionaire! (1985) - ABC

The Ramones cover is a founding moment in punk music: stark black and white photography, the band looking beyond grungy, filthy almost, and a backdrop to match, the trashy end of the bad part of town. I think it's worthy, simple though it is.

The other one . . . fails to impress me.

The Ramones cover is terrific. Iconic.

The other one… what the hell?
