The first one is either blank or minimalist...

Rolling Stone
Houses of the Holy (1973) - Led Zeppelin
Amazing.
I can't believe people can dislike this. LSD + Paintbrush = Win!

The Captain Beefheart link went dead apparently, after I checked it. Here's the image, though you weren't missing much:

Rolling Stone
Aladdin Sane (1973) - David Bowie
Book
Licensed to Ill (1986) - The Beastie Boys
My thoughts:
Much is made in the book about Licensed to Ill and how it was a wise decision for the white rappers not to reveal on the cover of their album that they were white. Which is a fine marketing decision, but doesn't make it great. They also flog the phallic symbol thing to death, which also doesn't make it great. They also insist on talking about the gatefold image, which is irrelevant to whether or not the cover is good.
The Bowie one, quite frankly, creeps me out. Probably the intent, but still . . .

Don't forget the mirrored "eat me" on the Beastie cover.
(Figured somebody had to point that out...)

Rolling Stone:
Bringing It All Back Home (1968) - Bob Dylan
Book:
Little Johnny C (1963) - Johnny Coles
My thoughts:
I like the Dylan album; it's one of his best. But one thing Dylan was never particularly good at was covers. Only Freewheelin' is really a great cover. This one isn't that great.
The Johnny Coles album, on the other hand, I really like. Sorry about the poor image, but I think you get the gist. I love the colors and the giant lower case c is a fantastic touch.

Book:
Look Sharp! (1978) - Joe Jackson
Rolling Stone:
Country Life (1974) - Roxy Music
My thoughts:
The Roxy Music one is not one of my favorites; I find the women not particularly attractive and if one is going to pander, one should at least pander with attractive women.
I love the Joe Jackson one; it's stark, but iconic.
I also dig the "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" riff on the cover.

The Coles album has an unusual style; and I love the white pig-stickers on the Jackson album.

The Roxy Music is not exactly subtle, no question.

Rolling Stone:
Metal Box (1979) - Public Image, Ltd.
Book:
London Calling (1979) - The Clash
My thoughts:
The Metal Box cover isn't made to look like a metal box; the album came in a metal box. This is ain't exactly "This is not a pipe," but then this is the Sex Pistols dudes, right?
I like the Clash one; it has lots of energy. But it isn't as good as the one it's ripping off, which is from Elvis' debut album:
But both The Clash and Elvis do justice to the conceit, I think, so I give them a pass for ripping him off.

The metal box is kinda...dull? The Clash one, however, isn't.

Agree with Zaz. London Calling's cover is iconic and has a great energy, suiting the album it goes with.
