But it's such a fun movie!

Yep, that review is just about dead on. Gladiator took many historical liberties with its plot, but it had a compelling one, that's for sure.

Back on Platoon for a second. Stone was in Vietnam, so I'd expect it to be pretty accurate.

Meh. I think that especially ancient history films aren't nearly as bound to accuracies. I personally have a mixed view of how historical films based on fact should be anyway. On the one hand, I love history and love knowing the true facts. On the other hand, I don't think that is necessarily the job of film... the past doesn't exist anyhow. Only various stories of it.

Gladiator is a great film inspired by facts. But I don't think they ever intended to present an extremely true to facts story. For that reason, I don't hold it to the facts at all. It's a great film with wonderful characters. I never saw it as particularly attempting to be a history lesson about the individuals. From what I understand the Roman society it shows is reasonably accurate, though... we should ask Jello tongue

10,000 BC deserves no comment. I refuse to acknowledge its existance plain

That's my feelings as well. In some other films, similar inaccuracies have bothered my somewhat but Gladiator was a brilliant movie and the history wasn't going to detract from that.

What I love about Gladiator is the grandness with which its inaccurate. It takes oneor two facts about Marcus Aurelius and Comodus, and uses them to make up a completely inaccurate story about them, even implyinfg that power was restored to the Senate after the latter's death, which of course it wasn't.

I still loved the movie, though.

"Gladiator" is actually based on a very bad movie called "The Fall of the Roman Empire"

Yep, I think that's hitting the nail on the head. It's a movie, not a documentary or education video (and we all know how accurate those can be... plain ), and it is meant to entertain. There are plenty of fairly well documented events that could make interesting movies, but that's not what our culture is in to necessarily. We, for better or worse, like compelling and entertaining stories, whether they are historically accurate or not. Despite all of this, like I said earlier, I really enjoy the movie.

I generally enjoy it, too; it's not irritatingly propagandistic, a la "Braveheart."

Oh snap, sounds like someone needs to recalibrate their sarcasm detector. tongue

I didn't take what the "noob" said personally at all. I'd never even posted in this thread until then, so I'm not one of those the "noob" said needed to get a life.

Seriously though, I've been modded for far less that what the "noob" said.
