That's all well and good, but most people don't watch the History Channel or even read books these days. It's really sad to watch films like Braveheart and know that kids, and adults for that matter, are going to watch it and think that it's at least close to what really happened when it isn't even close.
If you want artistic liberties fill in the gaps while staying fairly true to history like HBO's Rome did. Don't rewrite history for the sake your story.

And I must say that as an historian, History channel takes quite a few liberties as well. Even when I had it on cable I stopped watching after a few shows.
Anyway I'm very mixed when it comes to accuracies in movies, in general I think that if the movie is good I don't care, but if it's bad then I start notice everything that's wrong with it. A good example is Braveheart that I some times really like, and sometimes can't stand at all depending on my mood when watching.
I'm not too fond of Gladiator, but except for the historical/political inaccuracies I think it did a pretty good job of showing what Rome was like, including most of the male costumes and the architecture.

"Braveheart" is a particularly pernicious movie because it grafts modern notions of nationalism on people who didn't have them.

Next: "300"
"Though this paean to ancient moral codes and modern physical training is based on the real Battle of Thermopylae, the film takes many stylistic liberties. The most obvious one being Persian king Xerxes was not an 8-foot-tall Cirque du Soleil reject. The Spartan council was made up of men over the age of 60, with no one as young as Theron (played by 37-year-old Dominic West). And the warriors of Sparta went into battle wearing bronze armor, not just leather Speedos."

I thought was 300 supposed to be a comic book on film?

300 is not supposed to be historically accurate...
They have monsters with axes for arms, for Christ's sake.

Yes. It's an adaptation of a Frank Miller comic.
This movie is extremely historically inaccurate, but it's somewhat forgivable since it is supposed to be a soldier's exaggerated account of what happened and people shouldn't take it seriously after they see the Persians.
Though it's modernized plot was crap and unforgivable formulaic.

Technically, I noticed upon subsequent viewings that it's just one ugly dude with axes tied to his arms (or axe-like gloves).
However, I have no explanation for the goat-man.

Don't forget the giant goat-headed people. And the orcs.
If you watch this with the pure intention to have a good time, this is a fun popcorn flick. Probably the first gory movie that I actually liked.
(otherwise, it will drive you up the wall to realize some poor sap out there thinks this is what the actual battle was like)

But aside from the stuff like uniforms and the Persians. There was actually more stuff that was true than I thought. These examples being:
-Pushing people in the big hole (happened in Athens)
-"Come back with your shield, or on it."
-"Spartans, lay down your weapons." "Persians, come and get them."
-"Our arrows will blot out the sun." "Then we will fight in the shade."
-The Ephors (though they are not the same as depicted)
-The Oracle
The biggest thing that bugs me (I know I'm being a little hyprocritical) that is historically inaccurate is the reason why the Spartans stayed at Thermpolaye.
In the film: "Spartans never retreat. Spartans never surrender." That is just bad battle tactics.
In real life: They stayed to give the other Greeks a chance to escape. It is much more courageous and a little less stupid.

Actually, no that happened in Sparta, which means its probably the only scene in the movie that's even close to being totally accurate. The Athenian threw the Persian herald ino a well. The Spartans threw the Persian herald into a pit. The Spartans were a land power. The Athenians were a naval power. Personally, I like the symmetry.

And I have it on good authority that the real King Leonidas loved screaming "THIS IS SPARTA!" after deferring to his wife on all major decisions.

Well I knew that someone fell into a hole (well, whatever) in Athens.
