Next: "This is Spinal Tap" (1984)

USA, 91 m. Colour

Director: Rob Reiner

Producer: Karen Murphy

Screenplay: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Rob Reiner, Harry Shearer

Photography: Peter Smokler

Music: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Rob Reiner, Harry Shearer

Cast: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Rob Reiner, Harry Shearer, Bruno Kirby, Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Fran Dreschler, Ed Begley, Jr.

A mockumentary of a couple of rather pretentious ("Don't Look Back") and very, very pretentious ("The Last Waltz") rock documentaries, "This is Spinal Tap" mines the genre with great humour about stupidity. It takes stones to mock Scorsese, and after seeing "The Last Waltz", well, if he's *that* stupid, he absolutely deserves it.

I confess to not having seen this movie, though I have seen most of it via YouTube and random cable catches.

It used to come on Comedy Central seemingly every day in the mid-'90s. I always skipped over it until I caught "Stonehenge" and laughed harder than I'd ever laughed at a movie before.

It's a comedy classic, and still hilarious. Lots of rock stars didn't think it was funny because it was a little too true to life.

This is one of the funniest movies ever made for certain. The scene outside Graceland is worth the price of admission alone, as is the Stonehenge set piece, and the guitar room scene. And too much simply cannot be said about that final punch line. I laughed through the entire credits, I think; and the music is a brilliant satire. I still own the soundtrack, one of the only genuinely funny albums in existence.

I remember going to see U2's "Rattle and Hum" and marveling at their bravado showing up at Graceland. I mean, after "Spinal Tap," I had assumed it would be impossible to do a straight up rock-umentary where the band members go to Graceland. But I was wrong.

Next: "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984)

USA, 105 m. Colour

Director: Martin Brest

Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer, Don Simpson

Screenplay: Daniel Petrie, Jr., Danilo Bach

Photography: Bruce Surtees

Music: Harold Faltermeyer

Cast: Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkhoff

Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold back in the days when they were more fresh than obnoxious. Great score. The two sequels are disposable.

shock I don't even want to go there! BHC was a funny, fresh film and I liked it. The sequels, not so much.

Back briefly to Spinal Tap, the scene with Fran Drescher (yes, that's the Nanny with the nasal whine) and Spinal Tap's manager having a discussion of the Smell the Glove album cover is, for me, one of the funniest conversations in film history.

ESPECIALLY the manager's punch line!

Yes, that's it, but that's a slightly truncated version that loses a little of the buildup and the payoff. But yes, that's the essence of it.

I find it alarming that Spinal Tap has been shown to some teenagers who could not tell it was a satire. doh!

I really like BHC, and it was a favourite of my parents so I grew up watching it. I think BHC2 is quite decent as well, but I haven't even been close to watching the third one.

About BHC and its sequels:

Love the first one. Still haven't watched the second one, but I've been meaning to do so for many years now. And I seem to be the only person on the planet that doesn't hate the third one, I'd actually go so far as to say that I like it.
