While I'm no fan of the sequels, the original certainly was great. "Power of Love" was on the radio the other day, and instantly reminded me of how much fun that movie was.

I'm certainly no film expert, but how tightly written the script for "Back to the Future" is just astounds me.

The thing that I love is the end of Back to the Future Part II. The idea of setting a time travel movie inside another time travel movie was absolutely BRILLIANT. applause

I thought so, too. And I was so very impressed how closely they'd managed to get the stuff from the first film and put it all back together again, to shoot scenes we'd already seen, but now from another angle. It would have been nice if Crispin Glover had come back for the sequels, but they did OK without him. Maybe it gave Lea Thompson an opportunity for more screentime.

Part III also blew me away - the setting was the same, geographically speaking, but by going back about 100 years, they'd turned the California I know into the Old West, which I only see in the movies. And Mary Steenburgen was absolutely brilliant - her character was the perfect match for Doc Brown.

A great trilogy, and the first one is also a great stand-alone movie if you don't want to see all three films.

I'm glad they went with the DeLorean instead of a refrigerator.

Terrific series. The first is a must-see standalone, a cultural touchstone that absolutely belongs on this list. Yet my personal favorite of the series in II, which toys with a dark alternate future in a very convincing and somewhat disturbing fashion, and replays scenes from the first film in a fun and playful way, as Boba Jr noted.

Why I haven't bought these on DVD yet is anyone's guess! Perhaps because I pretty much have them memorized form repeat viewings in the 80s and 90s. wink

I seem to recall there was a problem with the widescreen process on the first DVD set, that they were artificially widescreened from 4x3 frames and that the resultant loss of image was embarrassing. Any idea if this problem was fixed in subsequent releases? If so, it may be time for me to spring for the whole set.

A click-together plot, with a witty script, brisk direction and fine performances.

I'd change that to "career best" performances (from, in my opinion, everybody in the movie) and add "fantastic score." Definitely a great, great movie.

Love this series. First film is a great stand-alone. Second film is by far my favorite (if we ever get flying cars, they better damn well have wheels that flip down like that!). And the third is just solidly done.

Less we not forget the amazing score. That fanfare is legendary and really gets you going.

Yeah, I never got the DVD set when it first came out because of the framing problems I heard so much about, and by time the revised releases were out there, I kept forgetting what little marker to look for to identify the corrected versions by.

The framing wasn't so much a close-croppd image but rather just incorrect framing off of the negative, which revealed boommikes and spoiled a couple gags.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the update. It sounds like the problem has been fixed, assuming you didn't notice any boom mics in the set you bought. wink

The best time travel idea till Lost season 5. Christopher Llyod is espeically inspried here. Just love this movie, and the script is to die for.

One of the all time great final lines of a movie:

"Roads? Where we're going we don't need...roads."

One thing on the DVD set about the music, Alan Silvestri asked Zemeckis what kind of score he wanted, and he said, "BIG BIG BIG, MAKE IT BIG AL!" Zemeckis was worried the movie did not have a lot of visual scope, or many vistas, he believed the movie felt too small. So he had Silvestri create a big booming orchestral score to compensate. It was one of the largest orchestras ever for a Universal film, I believe the DVD commentary said 98 musicians.

Love this series! love The 1st film is my favourite, but the 2nd is very good too (particularly the final act which takes place again in 1955 with Marty trying to re-negotiate half of the events of the 1st film). The 3rd is ok - it pretty much use time travel to setup the plot then settles for a somewhat stereotypical Western film, which works out fine but for me lacks the zany excitement of the first 2 films.

I actually never got around to picking one up, but it has been fixed, so long as your not grabbing one of the original copies that might still be on a store shelf or in a warehouse somewhere.
