Yeah, Top Gun is a classic and something various services and organizations have tried to replicate for decades without success (supposedly Air Force and Naval recruitment went through the roof due to the movie, and places like NASA had hoped to have a similar effect with movies like Armageddon).

So many elements of the film have worked their way into the fabric of pop culture and been significant to the progress of modern film history- Maverick/Goose nicknames, classic film lines like "I feel the need- the need for speed!", "Highway to the Danger Zone" is still popular today because of the film, it salvaged/relaunched Tony Scott's career, launched Cruise's mega-stardom, began a chain of big hits for Bruckheimer that lasts to this day, and the much-mocked homoerotic subtext via Tarintino.

Also it proves the F-14 is the most badass looking fighter ever invented. cool

Screenplay: Ross McElwee

Cast: Ross McElwee, Burt Reynolds, Charleen Swansea

A good example of cinema verite, (i.e. 'direct cinema'), this is an on-screen diary retracing Gen. Wm. T. Sherman's march to the sea. Have not seen it, but have read admiring reviews. The books says McElwee never descends to cheap shot or condescension, (take that, Michael Moore!).

Last seen giving a horrible guest performance on The X-Files; hopefully, he's still stranded on that boat. tongue

Sherman's March is one I really want to see.

Top Gun is absolute cheese; as such, it's instructive, but I wouldn't call it a great film. It's either too self-aware or not self-aware enough or perhaps, oddly enough, both. Kilmer's performance is more fun than Cruise's; Kilmer seems to actually be enjoying all the latent homoeroticism; Cruise, of course, is steadfastly trying to pretend it's more latent than it is. Well, do what you have too. I'd kick it off the list for any number of other great films that didn't make this list, frankly, but it's worth a watch, I suppose.

I didn't see THE HORSE THIEF until about three years ago. One of
the odd things about this picture is that it contains almost no dialogue
at all.

Wow, good question. We're talking about three, four years ago.
I'm guessing either Hong Kong or Singapore; probably the latter.
I know I didn't see it on disc or in the States.

Is it even out on disc? If so, I'd like to see it again.

It's miserably hard to see non-chop-socky Asian films, especially if they are not recent.

That's probably the most intelligent post I've read in a month. I do quite a bit of work in
San Francisco, and it's still difficult to see quality Asian films, even in the Asian theaters.
Then again, how many quality films do we see in any theater? I see round and about one
hundred films (or so) a year (or try to) and it can get depressing.

Oh, well. Needs of the service and all.

The book describes this movie as having 'a dense and exciting universe that should drive George Lucas green with envy.' It also describes this as the best African movie ever made.

I've seen it, have to admit I was disappointed. It's a very highly regarded film (lot's of "best of the decade" lists) it was a bit too "out there" for me.

Haven't seen it either, but ...

... this plot description made me think instantly of City of Angels (1998 film starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan) - I wonder to what extent the latter was based/influenced by the former.

"City of Angels" was a remake.
