USA, 154 mins. Colour

Director: Steven Spielberg

Producers: Quincy Jones, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Steven Spielberg

Screenplay: Menno Meyjes

Photography: Allen Daviau

Music: Quincy Jones

Cast: Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, Ophrah Winfrey

Spielberg on the trail of an Oscar. You are warned.

Allen Daviau shot three films for Spielberg in the 80s, E.T., The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun. This is easily one of Spielberg's most beautiful films and Daviau's best. The cinematography is exquisite and poetic, and fits the material like a glove. Daviau is a huge fan and student of the great painters. (He also shot small portions of Close Encounters and Temple of Doom.)

For me, the redeeming feature of the Color Purple is the way it looks. Colorful.

Why just a small portion?

Daviau shot the Gobi Desert scene for Close Encounters The Special Edition, long after the movie had first been released. That film's director of photography, Vilmos Szigmond, had long moved on to shooting other projects, such as The Deer Hunter and was not available.

Daviau shot the scenes for Temple of Doom that were done in America. The film's British director of photography, the legendary Douglas Slocombe, shot almost all of the movie in Sri Lanka and London. For some reason Slocombe didn't come to America to shoot those few scenes, and Daviau was called in by Spielberg to help take up the slack.

That's really interesting, about TOD and Close Encounters. I didn't know that; I can't even, at the moment, really remember when they were in America in TOD.

EDIT: Oh, you mean the scenes shot in America. Duh. Sorry. tongue

He'll see it sooner or later.

And yes, it somewhat rends the mind that Red Dragon is a great flick when it was directed by Brett Rattner, who somehow managed to jack up X-Men 3.

Say what you like, but "Manhunter"s Tiger scene was better. Plus I do think Peterson was better as Will Graham.

Although pitting that Noonan fellow against Ray Finnes is like pitting a man armed with a stick against a tank. Finnes is among the best actors alive -- many would say he IS the best actor alive. How do you go up against that?

I agree that the fellow in Manhunter probably was a better Will Graham, but I don't really care about that because there's literally dozens if not hundreds of well-portrayed detectives in film-Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt in Seven, for starters.

Well-portrayed and convincingly real serial killers are a different story; I can hardly think of any, besides Kevin Spacey in Seven and Ralph in Red Dragon, which is why I give RD the edge over Manhunter. Dolarhyde is the real focus of the original novel; Manhunter basically ignored that, and Red Dragon did not, and the result is a terrifying, horrific, and ultimately pitiable villain.

As for Fiennes, mmm...possibly the best actor alive, I'd say. I mean, just the story from the set of Schindler's List where his appearance in his SS uniform was enough to convince a Holocaust survivor that he was the real thing and nearly break down out of fear is a fearsome testimony to his skills.

If you watch Schindler's List, Strange Days and Quiz Show in succession, that can give you a good impression of the man's range.

I tried to watch Strange Days; the rape sequence was abit much for me. Not that I thought Ralph did poorly, not yeah, that was abit intense. tongue

He was very poor in his first appearance in GOF as Voldemort, but I blame that more on the director, not him.

Stephen King adapts well to the screen occasionally. I'm not sure this is one of the times.

It's a great movie. King's usually best when he's NOT doing Horror, and this isn't Horror.
