Possibly. tongue

1964: Solomon Burke - Rock 'n' Soul

This album is apparently officially deleted, which explains why I'm having a hard time finding it. Which makes it even more of a curious inclusion, really. Still, no-one denies that Burke was a great artist (although he has now decended into James Brown-levels of strangeness), and there are some very decent songs here. 'Cry To Me' (later covered by the Stones), 'Beautiful Brown Eyes' and 'If You Need Me' are all terrific. Worth listening to, if you can find the tracks on other compilations.

Tracklisting:

01. Goodbye Baby
02. Cry To Me
03. Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)
04. If You Need Me
05. Hard Ain't It Hard
06. Can't Nobody Love You
07. Just Out of Reach
08. You're Good For Me
09. You Can't Love Them All
10. Someone To Love Me
11. Beautiful Brown Eyes
12. He'll Have To Go

What does 'officially deleted' mean?

I'm discovering that there are a ton of albums on this list that aren't available on anything but vinyl.

Well, it usually means that any retail outlet you talk to about this album will immediately screw up their eyes, shove cotton wool in their ears, and repeat loudly, "Does not exist! Does not exist!" until you leave the store.

Either that or you'll have to find it on vinyl. tongue

Boogie asked me to take over this thread; he'll keep some of his others. happy

A Girl Called Dusty (1964) - Dusty Springfield

Tracks:

1. Mama Said
2. You Don't Own Me
3. Do Re Mi
4. When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes"
5. My Colouring Book
6. Mockingbird
7. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa
8. Nothing
9. Anyone Who Had A Heart
10. Will You Love Me Tomorrow
11. Wishin' And Hopin'
12. Don't You Know
13. I Only Want To Be With You

Springfield's debut album; I'm not as enamored of Springfield as many seem to be, but I haven't heard this album. You may recognize Will You Love Me Tomorrow; several artists have recorded that one. Carole King (who co-authored it) did her own stellar version on Tapestry.

Some great cuts there, but "Son of a Preacher Man" is missing.

Son of a Preacher Man, easily her most famous song, is on Dusty in Memphis, which we'll come to shortly. happy

The Rolling Stones (1964) - The Rolling Stones

Tracks:

1. Route 66
2. I Just Want to Make Love to You
3. Honest I Do
4. I Need You Baby
5. Now I've Got a Witness
6. Little by Little
7. I'm a King Bee
8. Carol
9. Tell Me
10. Can I Get A Witness
11. You Can Make it If You Try
12. Walking the Dog

This was the Stones' debut album. It was released in America under the title England's Newest Hit Makers. The US version featured Not Fade Away n place of I Need You Baby and truncated Tell Me to a shorter running time.

I haven't heard this one; early in their career so they're still doing covers. Still, with their energy, they could make covers work, I'll bet. I'd like to hear this one.

It doesn't have their best cover (IMO) "Little Red Rooster". Rumour has it that they once watched Lennon and McCartney write songs and decided they could do so, too.

I've Got a Tiger by the Tail (1965) - Buck Owens

Tracks:

1. I've Got a Tiger by the Tail
2. Trouble and Me
3. Let the Sad Times Roll On
4. Wham Bam
5. If You Fall Out of Love With Me
6. Fallin' for You
7. We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll
8. The Band Keeps Playin' On
9. The Streets of Laredo
10. Cryin' Time
11. A Maiden's Prayer
12. Memphis

Country artist famous for the Bakersfield sound. Haven't heard any of his stuff.

From Wiki: "In the early 1960s, the "countrypolitan" sound was popular, with smooth, string-laden, pop-influenced styles used by Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, and Patsy Cline, among others. Owens went against the trend, utilizing pure and raw honky-tonk hillbilly feel, mixed idiosyncratically with the Mexican polkas he had heard on border radio stations while growing up."

I love "Act Naturally"; both Owens original and the Beatles' cover. It's not on this record. I would like to hear Owens' take on "The Streets of Laredo"

Oh! That Buck Owens! tongue

I have heard his Act Naturally; I just forgot.

Live at the Star Club, Hamburg (1964) - Jerry Lee Lewis

Tracks:

1. Mean Woman Blues
2. High School Confidentla
3. Money (That's What I Want)
4. Matchbox
5. What'd I Say, Part 1
6. What'd I Say, Part 2
7. Great Balls of Fire
8. Good Golly Miss Molly
9. Lewis Boogie
10. Your Cheatin' Heart
11. Hound Dog
12. Long Tall Sally
13. Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On

Haven't heard this one, but it's routinely called one of the greatest live albums ever. Lewis' popularity had taken a slight upswing again in Europe by this time and according to a review I read of the album, Lewis sets the pace almost impossibly fast and then constantly berates and shouts at his backing musicians for not keeping up. That alone makes me want to track this one down.

And, of course, this is an incredible set list, isn't it?

Yes, this looks great. Gotta look for it.

Rogue, have you ever seen "Great Balls of Fire" (w. Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder)?
