I agree "Gladiator" is good but not Oscar-worthy (at least in the acting department). However, Irving Rapper is really an obvious and uninteresting director, and I've never liked "A Glass Menagerie" much as a play, either.

I'm surprised no one commented on The General earlier. I have to say that the film is a real testament to silent comedy--like the train, it keeps going and going at an excellent pace. Keaton does not disappoint.

I've only read a couple. I liked Andrew George's translation for Penguin Books.

12 Songs (1970) - Randy Newman

Newman's second album finds him placing his rollicking piano out front backed by Ry Cooder's magnificent guitar. There's mean spiritedness galore, but always with wit: My Old Kentucky Home, Underneath the Harlem Moon, Yellow Man. And flashes of rare poetry: "I'll talk to strangers if I want to/I'm a stranger too." And some creepy music; check out the utterly bleak Let's Burn Down the Cornfield. Timeless, hilarious, brilliant; Mama Told Me Not to Come is the standard, but the whole album is excellent.

Cars (2006) - John Lasseter/Joe Ranft

Hardly up to the snuff of previous Pixar films; it's below Monsters, Inc., both Toy Stories and The Incredibles. But it's still interesting and witty. The humor is a bit more laid back, but they still supercede my expectations. An excellent ensemble cast adds to the humor.

The Colbert Report (2005 - ?) - Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart/Ben Karlin

Satire has hardly been more pointed than this; eschewing the overt comedy stylings of his launching pad, Colbert invests instead in an utterly deadpan performance art that lampoons conservative politics with an incisive eye that even conservatives should be able to laugh at. Making the occasional interesting point isn't enough for Colbert; every joke makes you laugh and then makes you laugh some more and then makes you wonder . . . smart humor has rarely been this smart. Bureauracracy beware; you're on notice.

The Daily Show (1996 - ?) - Madeline Smithberg/Lizz Winstead

Surprising that this got left off my initial list; always winning; if the material is bad, Stewart owns up with an ironic delivery that makes you laugh in spite of yourself. To explain the shows incredible run: its basis is the absurdity inherent in the democratic process. How could it ever run dry?

The Eyre Affair (2001) - Jasper Fforde

The signalling of a profound talent; this is literature down the rabbit hole. Certainly the funniest novels since Douglas Adams hung up his hat; and they're equally thought provoking. If you find your passion for literature flagging, invest in this book. It'll make you laugh, make you think, make you feel the real awe of literature again. This is comedy, yes, but comedy to rekindle the fire for reading.

Catch up post. tongue

Daily Show and Colbert Report are always at the top of my Tivo season pass manager- good cappers to the day, and, in many ways, is a a much better source of news and world events than the actual 24 hour cable news stations themselves- it really helps put events into perspective when you can see just how ridiculous things actually are and are presented in a manner acknowledging this.

12 Songs: Never heard it.

Cars: I agree. It was certainly head and shoulders above other modern (Western) animated efforts, but didn't blow me away as Pixar usually does.

Colbert Report: I give you a Tip of my Hat. wink

Daily Show: The classic, and still (!) great. Jon Stewart's deliveries are superb. Sometimes he doesn't even need to say anything. Just the proper clip, and silence to let the insanity of the real news item hang in the air... laugh

Eyre Affair: An excellent book. One of the more accessible Ffordes to the uninitiated, and certainly still brilliant. Start here, then read the rest of the series, then probably all the books mentioned within. tongue

Colbert Report, funny, but not as much as the Daily Show. Jon Stewart rocks.

Cars, of which I've seen only the first hour or so, is also really good.

I'm glad "The Eyre Affair" was brought up again. I wrote the title down a few months ago and promptly forgot about it. Right now I'm drudging through War and Peace, and after that is Beowulf, but hopefully I'll get around to reading "The Eyre Affair" soon after.

You know, you're supposed to get all academicified when you're in college, but I've found myself too busy with schoolwork to get into the heavy reading I've been looking forward to. plain

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) - James Foley

A powerhouse cast (Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, etc) assemble for this magnificent film about the pressure cooker of high pressure salesmanship; the Glengarry leads are in, but in order to get them, these desperate salesmen will have to prove their talent and worth. Thus ensues a nightmarish sequence of events that is as high octane and high intensity as film drama comes. Like watching an actor's studio.

Glo (2000) - Delirious

The band's towering achievement, the best since their double album debut; this is pure majestic hard rock that gives new meaning to the word 'anthemic.' There are moments of quiet and passion as well, but the moments of real energetic rock sell the album. Martin Smith continues to sell as the hardest working frontman in the business (well, just about anyway), delivering the goods without a let up. And this album features four extended instrumental sequences, labelled Glo in the Dark; the final one is a brilliant string riff and the second features one of the most gorgeous electric guitar duets I've ever heard. A masterpiece in every way.

Glory (1989) - Edward Zwick

A powerful ensemble puts it on the line in this stirring story; if the film reaches very obviously for the uplift chord, it can be forgiven since it actually reaches it, unlike some. A stirring, powerful, thrilling, masterpiece.

Glory for Me (1945) - Mackinley Cantor

A devestating novel, written entirely in poetry format. It inspired The Best Years of Our Lives; here, as in the film, there are three characters returning from World War II. Their plights are darker here, the studio dictating even to a mature and thoughful film like The Best Years of Our Lives and the style which would seem to be a miscalculation works brilliantly. There are powerful meditations on death, grief, violence, psychosis, physical sickness, emotional devestation in this heartfelt and powerful collection of poems. The film could hardly have not been great with this brilliant volume of poetry as its source material.

The Godfather (1972) - Francis Ford Coppola

This seems to be the post for ensemble casts; what remains to be said about this riveting ensemble, many on the cusp of superstardom? It's a quintessentially American film, one of the few absolutely perfect movies; it is the American dream and the American fall from grace. It is about the family supported and the family rejected. It is about everything; you know the scenes, you know the lines, you've seen it before, probably several times. Doesn't matter; watch it again.

I actually blind bought Glengarry Glen Ross not long ago, but haven't managed to get it watched yet. I might stop back in here to share my thoughts once I do.

I haven't seen Glory in ages, but remember liking it.

The Godfather is of course amazing. There are a few films I might enjoy more, but even fewer I admire more than the tremendous work done on this by everyone involved.

i'll say what i always say and truly believe about the godfather: it's the best there ever was and ever will be. it is perfect, and is an astounding achievement in film and art itself. it's nearly impossible to overstate its brilliance, and it will be impossible to top. it can be equaled, perhaps, but never bettered.
