RE: The Essentials: Halloween/Hamlet
I haven't seen Branagh's Hamlet. Have seen some of Olivier's and thought he was too old. Haven't seen Gibson's either, but he was pretty good as Fletcher Christian in "The Bounty." Unfortunately for him, the film also featured Hopkins as Bligh, and Neeson and Day-Lewis as crew members (what a Christian Day-Lewis would have been!)

the ethan hawke one is so good, easily accused of trying for novelty and so pulling it off.

RE: The Essentials: Halloween/Hamlet
Hamlet (2000) - Michael Almereyda
Second only to Branagh's epic vision, this version sets Hamlet in a dystopian present; the CEO of the Denmark Corporation has just died and his feckless son, Ethan Hawke in his best performance, is set on a course of vengeance. His Hamlet is new and different; genuinely depressive and melancholic. Kyle McLachlan is an outstanding Claudius, easily his best performance as well. And Bill Murray is surprisingly great as Polonius, finding a real balance of pedantic snobbery. A meditation on power and pain and, most tellingly, on the modern age of technology. One update that actually works and adds depth, not detracts charm.
The Hand of God (1898) - Auguste Rodin
Not Rodin's most famous, but his best; the sculptor transfixed and deified.
Happy Man (1979) - B.J. Thomas
Thomas' best album; the inspirational singer finds faith in God and sings songs of faith and hope with conviction that makes them succeed. A lesser singer and this album might sound twee; Thomas has just enough pain to leaven the conviction and the album is a brilliant one.
A Hard Day's Night (1964) - The Beatles
It opens with a shimmering guitar strum that seems to stretch forever; it gets better from there. Defining the rock soundtrack and if it pales (and only slightly) in comparison with some of their later work, this album is still a five star effort all the way, pure joie de vivre from start to finish. Can't Buy Me Love still may be their best song.
A Hard Day's Night (1964) - Richard Lester
Stark black and white images, an outstanding soundtrack, a witty post-modern script, a satirical eye on the vicissitudes of fame; the mockumentary is born and it could hardly have a better beginning. Blisteringly funny, outstandingly high energy, witty, charming, utter entertainment. One of the all time great films; and they call it pop cinema.

Haven't seen it. Can't see Hawke in ze part. He's so...weedy.
The Hand of God (1898) - Auguste Rodin
It looks, just a bit, like bad devotional art.
Happy Man (1979) - B.J. Thomas
Is this the one with "Mighty Clouds of Joy" on it? I like that one, and "Rock 'n Roll Lullaby". Thomas could be very good or very pop, and so avoid the godawful "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head". Wish those raindrops would turn into a flood and wash that song away.
A Hard Day's Night (1964) - The Beatles
'Pure joie de vivre' sums it up.
A Hard Day's Night (1964) - Richard Lester
The film that sired MTV. But don't hold it against them; it's almost worth it. Great fun.
