What movies have genuinely affected your life? I have to say one of mine is Saving Private Ryan. I had absolutely no grip on the tremendous sacrifice of those in the service before that film. The film changed the way I look at a soldier, and at history. Amazing.

What are the movies that changed your life, and how?

Star Wars. I was one yean old in 1977 and my life since has change in all possible aspects tongue

Seriously i would say Life is beauthiful (La vita è bella). Great self sacrifice to make sure that his kid doesn't have a clue about the mess he's in.

And I,ve been trying to be as optimistic as Benigni since, but it's hard!

Star Wars, for starters, because it really got me into Science Fiction and that's a huge factor of my life.

But also Firefly, the series, because it really got me interested in how things are filmed, and it's gotten me to look at things analitically.

there are quite a few movies that have changed me, some in big ways, some in smaller, subtle ways, but here's some:

Platoon (1986) -- IMO, still the best Vietnam war movie made, it not only made me feel what the soldiers may have been feeling, but it reinforced messages/ideas that life isn't always clear or easy, and doing what is right likewise is not always easy. And the ending is strong, leaving us with a narration that, in short, says that we not only have a responsibility to make a better world for future generations, but that we also have to live our own lives and try to improve our lives. In the most simplistic summarization of it, it seems to be saying, always grow.....

Saving Private Ryan also moved me, and made me feel proud to be American (no, don't misunderstand, not as some pro-war, war-hungry, gung-ho blindly nationalistic person, but rather, made me think of what soldiers go through, and that, whether what they are fighting for is right or wrong, they still are making a sacrifice.

And this may sound goofy to some of you, but among recent movies, Batman Begins also gave me some insight on life. Bruce Wayne is always tortured by his past, but he channels it to do something good for society. And he believes that even when things look their worst, he still aims to believe that things can be changed for the better.

...eh, films that altered my outlook on life?

A couple of Stanley Kubrick flicks:

"Paths of Glory", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Dr. Strangelove", "Full Metal Jacket"..

All of them forced me to really think about where i was as a person, and how i could improve myself (can't explain why, but they all did at various stages of my life, cause me to contemplate and re-evaluate)

How the films mentioned above helped me appreciate movies is they really showed great storytelling. Also, they are some of the reasons I want to be a director.

I watched "The Red Shoes" on TCM, and in the introduction they said that nearly every ballet dancer they knew cited the movie as the reason they took it up. Can't say it had that effect on me. The movie is very dated in some ways, but Moira Shearer is SO. DAMN. BEAUTIFUL. who cares. And the colour cinematography is sublime.

Star Wars is obviously one of them, seeing as since I first saw it when I was 6 I've never held any other movie up to standard with the OT.

Also, Empire Records. That movie makes me want to own a record store.

The Exorcist - Terrorized me relentlessly from the age of about 8 until, oh, some time last week. Being haunted by it inspired me to read the novel at age 11, which cemented a lifelong love of literature, and was the first film I studied every frame of, every line of dialogue, every nuance, trying to fathom what is so special and unique about it.

The Empire Strikes Back - Would you believe it opened my eyes spiritually? I was an atheist before I began to consider Yoda's speech about the circle of life. It's also infused with a pure joy of cinema, which I revel in.

Excalibur - Introduced me to the Arthurian legends, and to the themes of love, lust, life and death, in a very visceral way.

An American Werewolf in London - The first love story I ever "got into" at age 11. It also terrified me to the point that I was incapable of taking the trash out at night for fear of a werewolf attack. For many years, too, I wanted to be a make-up artist, mainly through the influence of this brilliant film.

Scarface - I never understood the origins of crime, greed, or murder until I watched this movie multiple times in my teens. Extremely formative film in terms of my worldview and cultural perspectives.

Hmm...a lot to choose from, but I think I can narrow things down:

!) The Star Wars Trilogy- For my entire life (as far as my cocnious memory can go) these were never three separate movies, they were always taken as a whole. The only distinctions were superficial ("Why is HBO showing ESB all the time?"). Anyways, this influenced me greatly- as a kid and leading to adulthood, bringing me into SW EU and likely expanding my typically-used vocabulary far more rapidly than my peers, and it got me keenly inetrested in the making of movies.

The first "making of" books and videos I owned were about the trilogy (or one of the movies of the trilogy). My family has gone to Disney World almost every summer since the very early 90's, and one of the things I always saw at MGM Studios was that damn gorgeous and massive "Industrial Light & Magic: The Art of Special Effects" coffee table book, and, after a couple years of repeated pleading, finally convicned my parents to get it for me (and, a few years later, it's sequel). I also pinpoint SW for showing me the way to letterbox.

2) Terminator 2: Judgement Day- First saw this on video wen I was 9 years old, and it really changed my outlook on things. Both in the commentary on mankind's nature and in the behind the scenes technical aspect that evolved what Star Wars began and brought it to the next level that Cameron brings all his work to. SW made me fall in love with the art, T2 made me fall in love with the technical aspects.

That T2: ultimate Edition Laserdisc taunted me for several years on a shelf in a video store at the mall- the few tidbits I could get off the internet back then about deleted scenes, etc. They finally released a letterbox version of the Special Edition and I could absorb all that myself. Watched that so many times. Eventually it was one of my earliest DVD's, later purchased twice oevr to get both the Ultimate and Extreme Editions.

But I can definitely point to T2 as a film that guided the forging of many of my outlooks on aspects of life.

3) The Abyss: Special Edition- Springboarded from T2, even though this came out before T2 in theaters, I didn't really se eit until this point, and it was worth the wait. From my POV, what T2 started, The Abyss: SE continued. Talk about just an incredible film that was amazing on every level, and I'll be damned if I didn't dig through every inch of that massively deep amount of extra features on the SE DVD.

4) Babylon 5- Not a movie, granted, but it's cinematic and deserving of being in the company of SW and Cameron. Didn't watch this really when it first aired. It wasn't until just after high school that I got to experience the whole series from start to finish during SFC's first airing of the widescreen versions. Probably the perfect time in my life to experience it- it changed my entire outlook on what TV was capable of achieving, and the philosophies within it's stories continue to reveal new jems and insights even almost a decade later. What T2 started and The Abyss: SE continued, B5 finished.

5) The Dark Knight- with it's riverboat connundrum, it surprised me by showing that I could be wrong in such a situation (which is not to suggest I think I am incapable of being wrong, just unlikely to be wrong in an extreme sitiuation such as that) and allowing me to understand what circumstances or influencing factors could result in my being wrong in said situation, thus allowing me to, theoretically, be in a position to better judge such a scenario than I was before I saw that movie. In a small way, it made me a better person.
