Here's the world-wide gross on Sweeney:
Domestic: $52,898,073 35.3%
+ Foreign: $97,000,000 64.7%
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $149,898,073
It was modestly budgeted at 50 million, which tells you Depp and Burton did not get paid their usual salaries.
Since it's earned approximately three times it's production cost, it's probably well in the black, especially since sales of the soundtrack were quite healthy and the DVD is out on April 1st, all of which will contribute to the bottom line.
All in all, another success for Tim Burton, though not as big a one as expected. The fact that it was rated R is probably one reason it didn't gross more, and probably a big reason Dreamworks held the budget at 50 million.

Report Card on Depp/Burton DVD releases
I don't necessarily agree...I liked both "Sleepy Hollow" and "Willy Wonka" better than the reviewer did.

I'm surprised, since it's Entertainment Weekly, that the "report card" wasn't harsher. I think both Charlie and Sleepy Hollow were fine films. I did like his assessment of Ed Wood.
They're obviously doing this article today since today is the release of the DVD of Sweeney Todd.
Naturally, my copy has already been ordered and is on it's way.

Did you get the single-disc or the 2-disc edition?

Princess Tina, I'm definitely a "two disc edition" kind of guy. Especially if it's a Tim Burton film.
I'm looking forward to the extras on this one.
I'm also looking forward to the first pieces of news about Burton's next film, ALICE IN WONDERLAND. It's supposed to start shooting this month I believe.

Most of us in this thread I've seen Burton's Sweeney Todd and seen Depp sing "My Friends" to his set of razors. Now that the DVD is out, I've had a chance to study the scene and the song in more detail.
Well, here we have a You Tube clip of Stephen Sondheim, the master songwriter himself, directing and teaching a student how to sing "My Friends." It's about 9 minutes long. Looks like it must have been from the 80s, because Mr. Sondheim looks much thinner than he does nowadays.
As I watch this, and think of Johnny's performance, it looks as though Sondheim may have given some of the same suggestions to Johnny. With Tim Burton's blessing, I'm sure.
The breathing, the focus, the whole performance is right on the money in terms of what Sondheim wanted in that scene from that character.

Yes, after watching that clip, you really get a sense of Sondheim's passion and attention to detail. Truly, a genius. He and Tim were perfectly in sync on this movie.

This is an expansion of my previous post, where we saw Sondheim teach a drama student how to sing "MY FRIENDS" in youtube video.
Some industrious soul has actually expanded on that, and yes, apparently Johnny Depp interpreted the song precisely as Stephen Sondheim prefers. The video cuts back and forth from Sondheim to Depp, and the connections are obvious.
