Really? I felt the whole Christopher Lee thing caused the character to stray tooooo far from the Willy Wonka of the books...
Everything else about Depp's Wonka worked for me, save for this bit. I love Christopher Lee as much as the next guy, but that element just wasn't required for the story...

Jumping in here since Burton is one of my top favourite film directors...
I've seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (both old and new versions) once and I'd love to see it again when I get a chance to rent it. Christopher Lee's role in the film was both interesting and intriguing for me and I thought it really added to the film.
I found Depp's Wonka a little... odd at first, but then I grew to love his decidedly unique portrayal of the character.

I preferred the second Willy Wonka movie. But then, I saw it first.

Well I don't think we could have expected an extremely faithful adaptation. Burton was very faithful to the spirit of the story though

I read that Christopher Lee was to be in Sweeney Todd but his role was cut due to time. I think he was to be a singing ghost?
In the stage version of Sweeney Todd, "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" is reprised many times during crucial moments throughout the play. In the film, Christopher Lee, along with two other men, was supposed to play a "gentleman ghost," possibly one of Sweeney's victims, and sing the many reprises. I am not sure why it was cut, but I think that it was an okay change as it wasn't really necessary to the film like it is to the stage version.

Well I felt that Sweeney Todd is a very unconventional adaptation of a musical.

From RT:
"#7 JOHNNY DEPP AND TIM BURTON MAKING A MOVIE TOGETHER? NO WAY!
Surprising absolutely no one if it is true, AICN is reporting a rumor that Johnny Depp has signed to play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland movie, which will start filming in 2009 for a release on March 5th, 2010. It is true that Burton has been doing casting for the movie recently (Mia Wasikowska was cast as Alice), and obviously, Depp and Burton work together a lot (this would be their 7th film together, and Depp is also reportedly likely to play Barnabas the vampire in Tim Burton's movie version of Dark Shadows). It would be cool to see Johnny Depp apply his madness to the hatter, but I'm sure the challenge, each time he takes on a bizarre creature like the hatter, is that he has to find a way to do it so that this isn't a repeat channeling of Willy Wonka, or Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, etc."

When I read this thread's title, that's who I pictured Depp playing. He's a good fit if this is true.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the start date of principal photography. I had read earlier this year that it was to start shooting in April of THIS year, several months ago. Now I've read it starts shooting in November of this year for a 2010 release. I'm as confused as some of the characters in the story of Alice!
Of all the characters in the story, that's the best fit for Depp. And Burton will inevitably be criticized for using him AGAIN. What's wrong with that? Practically every director in the world would like to work with Johnny Depp. If you've got access and a good working relationship and friendship, why not?

I re-watched the Disney Alice the other day; it's one of my fave films based on one of my fave books. When I first heard about the Burton project I wondered why, aside from the obvious financial incentive, anyone would have any reason to re-make Alice with live action and CGI. But as I watched the Disney movie -- which is of course still AWESOME and highly entertaining! -- I realized that the Disney animators jumbled up the Wonderland segments with the Looking Glass segments to make something of a mishmash. If Burton can restore the proper (improper?) chronology to the stories, and keep them as distinct works with their own special flavors, I'll be all for this project. It will be fun and hopefully funny to see Alice in Wonderland as its own thing and Alice through the Looking Glass as it own thing.
