Yeah, let's just go ahead and crown 50 Cent the greatest rapper of all time. The guy sells a ****load of albums! He must be great!

I'm not much for hip hop (Doggystyle and Cypress Hill's Black Sunday are the only proper albums I own), but I couldn't help but notice that some of these so-called "worst" rappers have sold albums in the millions, and not just a one-hit wonder album like Vanilla Ice, but several albums in the millions. If they suck so bad, the public obviously doesn't think so.

So that leads me to think that maybe it was something more than just the rhymes selling the album--like the production style & who the producer is. Is it me, or does it seem more and more that a hip hop album's success is becoming dependent on who the producer is instead of just the artist? Example: would Eminem still have been as successful as he was if Dr Dre wasn't solidly behind him? Did Em's rhymes even matter anymore after his breakthrough album?

You're right. Production is becoming more and more important. Producers are almost as big as the actual rappers, however, the Eminem example is terrible. Yes, his skills were more important than the production [though, certainly that was important, too.. if you're amazing and the beat sucks...]. At least for his first two albums. Definitely at the end of his career he fell off a little bit because he could do whatever and people would buy it, but once again, that wasn't because of production that was because of Eminem. Once you hit a certain level like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Eminem... you're a brand name. People will buy your albums no matter what.

I actually think Vanilla Ice was more than a one hit wonder. I think he had two successful albums. He was in a movie or two. I think everyone who had bought into him suddenly realized he sucked.

I think Eminem is a great enough rapper he could have done it without Dre, but certainly without Dre he wouldn't have been in a position to, if that makes sense [it does]. But definitely, the Dre production contributed a lot.

Anyway, there are terrible popular artists.

Tonight:

10-11:30PMSundance, TV-PG Inside Look
East of Havana

"In 2001, Charlize Theron and pal Jauretsi Saizarbitoria had a transformative experience while visiting Cuba. ''We went to a bar, thinking we would listen to typical Cuban music,'' Theron tells EW. ''Instead, three teen-agers started rapping!'' The surprise inspired this doc (Theron produced, Saizarbitoria codirected) on Cuba's rap scene, where beats and rhymes are potent tools of social protest. ''Hip-hop in America has become very superficial,'' says Theron. ''But when it started, it was about poor kids talking about their circumstances. That history is now repeating itself.'' — Simon Vozick-Levinson"

Sounds good to me...

I'm about to listen to some of his new songs. Never heard 'em and I'm excited. The last new song I heard that I was thoroughly impressed with was The Game feat. Keisha Cole-Game's Pain. That is a straight up west coast song and the video is off the chain.

I'm sure Lil' Wayne wrote it. Then again I was so sure Eazy-E wrote all of his rhymes...so much for that. I'm bumpin' Ice Cube right now actually.

I doubt Lil Wayne wrote it, he's notorious for having ghost writers.

That's too bad. If I was a rapper I would not rap unless I had my own material. That's like having someone score a touchdown for you if you're playing football and it's your play. Granted there are times in sports where teamwork is needed but c'mon. A better analogy would be if I had someone else teach my kids life lessons instead of me. Not that someone couldn't do that in a positive way but that's my job. I don't know.

I wonder what would happen if Lil' Wayne battled Kanye West.

Kanye's not much of a freestyler... at all. I've seen some stuff of his on youtube where he battled Mos Def, and he was clearly outmatched.
