Movies like this are not supposed to be understood. You're just supposed to sit back be entertained by the insanity.
Like a decent psychedelic, not that I would know anything about that though...

I hated this movie the first time I saw it, but it's grown on me since then. I absolutely love the music, the cast, and how different it is from traditional musicals. Even still, I have trouble watching the first half hour - it's just so strange.

The third most bizarre movie musical I've seen(Rocky Horror and Cabaret are the first and second, respectively), but my favorite out of the three. The first time I watched it it gave me a headache, but once I got used to Baz's frenzied camera work, MR! isn't that bad.

Something I couldn't stop thinking about when watching this film was the fact that Obi-Wan is tone deaf according to the EU, but Ewan loves to sing.

And girls, who liked the bearded shots?

Kylie was great as the Green Fairy, and I loved "Like a Virgin"

One of the things I love about this movie is that it is the perfect conclusion to Baz's "Red Curtain Trilogy." All three of the movies tell the same basic story, but through different mediums. Strictly Ballroom is told in Dance, Romeo and Juliet is told through poetry, and Moulin Rouge is told through song...and song almost works the best of the three to tell the story.

To me it's the opposite, I can't read the Cestus Deception, where Obi-Wan goes to a ball, without thinking about him dancing away MR-style.

I love MR, but I must say that I'm dazzled more by the production than the storyline. I simple can't get enough of the costumes, the music and the overall style of it, it does loose some of it's tempo though after the first half of the film. I guess just nothing can stand up against the frenzy of the can-can sequence.

I don't like Moulin Rouge all that much. I thought the music was pretty good, and the singing. The scenery and costumes were lovely, too. I just think it is a bit overrated.

maybe my standards are low... i really didn't think they were bad singers.

i love this film to death, even though i find ewan mcgregor fairly grating and the first 15 minutes very OTT... i love how unironic and loving it is with its subject matter and the songs in it work beautifully.

I adore this movie! grin love Ewan and Nicole were perfect and the supporting cast was superb! I have almost all the songs from the soundtracks on my ipod and jam out to them constantly. I belt the words out like no other. tongue

This movie was wonderful and I still cry every single time I watch it, even though I know what happens.

And to whoever said they wished it had been in french... yuck. Just no. The movie would've bombed because no one likes to try to read subtitles or listen to a voice that you know doesn't belong to the actor. Especially when it's a musical. Plus this movie wasn't meant to be historically accurate and adding French would've just been too much.

I also think that the Duke is one of the best characters. In fact the only character I'm not totally fond of is Satine, or rather Nicole Kidman's performance. If there was one thing I could have changed about MR it would have been her. It's not that she's making a bad performance, but rather she doesn't blend in as well with the other characters. On the other hand that might be the whole idea, to have one totally serious actor in the middle of all campiness.

MacGregor deserved, at the very least, an Oscar nomination. He didn't get one, of course. Kidman did, for doing quite a bit less than he did. Oh, well.

One of my favorite musicals, by the way.
