The Merv Griffin Show

(from TV.com)

Airs Next: Syndicated at Weekdays 2:00 PM (60 min.)
Status: Ended Premiered: October 1, 1962 Last Aired: August 29, 1986
Show Categories: Talk Shows, Variety Shows

Merv's talk show first aired on NBC (1962-1963, then again 1965-1968), CBS (1969-1972), and in syndication afterwards. Merv became a television host after filling in for Jack Parr on the Tonight Show in 1962 which impressed NBC enough to develop the Merv Griffin Show. The rest is history as we say. Beloved, endearing and charming host his OOOOO has become his own personal signature.

Seen the occasional clip from it, but nothing more. Looks very generic.

MADtv.

Airs Next: FOX at Saturday 11:00 PM (60 min.)
Status: Returning Series Premiered: October 14, 1995
Show Categories: Comedy, Variety Shows

A similar show to Saturday Night Live and In Living Color, sketch comedy series MADtv mines the world of popular culture for subjects ripe for parody. Based on the comic stylings of MAD magazine, the series satirizes celebrities, music videos, television shows, and more through outrageous sketches, a unique assembly of recurring characters, and the uninhibited zaniness of cast members.

MADtv is now currently in its 12th season on FOX.

Stephanie Weir is quite possibly the funniest woman alive. I love MadTV. The Blind Master sketches, which parody martial arts films, are a riot as are the ones where Weir plays the hyperactive little girl.

Status: Ended Premiered: October 3, 1955 Last Aired: December 30, 1959
Show Categories: Children, Variety Shows

"Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?" Next to Howdy Doody (which it helped unseat), The Mickey Mouse Club was the defining children's television program of the 1950's. The show, which aired daily, featured a true variety of entertainment: singing, dancing, guest stars, classic Disney cartoons, serials, and a group of talented kids who became overnight sensations—the Mouseketeers. Led by adult leader Jimmy Dodd, and flanked by hefty Disney animator Roy Williams, the Mouseketeers sang and danced their way into the hearts of the first TV generation.

The standout of the group was Annette Funicello. Young America watched as the lovely and talented teenaged beauty developed before their very eyes. Annette soon starred in her own serial on the show, and went on to a successful career in film and music.

Another popular element of the show was the serialized adventures of The Hardy Boys and Spin and Marty. Veteran Disney child actor Tim Considine starred in both, making him what many refer to as the "Honorary Mouseketeer." Other serial performers included Tommy Kirk, David Stollery, and Roy Barcroft.

Forever let us hold our banner

High! High! High! High!

Mickey Mouse club

We'll have fun

We'll be new faces

High! High! High! High!

We'll do things and

We'll go places

All around the world

We'll go marching

Who's the leader of the club

And now for something completely different:

Monty Python's Flying Circus was simply the most influential comedy program television has ever seen. Five Englishmen, all working under the constraints of conventional TV shows such as The Frost Report (for which the five Englishmen wrote), gathered together with an expatriate American in the spring of 1969 to break the rules. The result, first airing on BBC-1 on October 5, 1969, has influenced countless future men and women in the media and comedy since.

Yes, there is some musical comedy, but otherwise, how is this a variety show?

Wrong! Four Englishmen, one Welshman, and one American! nerd

tongue

But yeah, to keep on topic, I agree with Zaz. I'm a huge Python fan (as everyone who knows me knows all too well), but MPFC isn't really a variety, even though there are quite a few musical numbers in it.

The Muppet Show

After the success of Sesame Street in 1969, Muppet creator Jim Henson wanted to have a chance at his own series. In 1974, Henson shot a Muppet special called The Muppets' Valentine Show, which would later become a precursor for The Muppet Show. The special starred famous muppet, Kermit the Frog, with a cast of new muppets including: George the Janitor, Droop the Anteater, Crazy Donald (later named Crazy Harry), Brewsters the oldtimer, Mildred the goose, and Rufus (later named Muppy). Many of these characters were used during the first season of The Muppet Show, and quickly faded away to background characters. The special featured actress Mia Farrow, who taught the muppets about love, and that everyone loves something. Afterwards in 1975, Henson shot the failed pilot for the Muppet Show: Sex and Violence. Amazingly, Kermit the Frog was not in the pilot at all! Instead, the host was wimpy, Nigel, who Jim Henson wrote out of the show soon afterwards. After about a year, the muppet team went to the United Kingdom and were given the green light for the Muppet Show. The show became one of the top syndicated comedies of all time! The show featured a new group of Muppet characters including: Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Scooter, Beauregard, Rowlf the Dog, and The Electric Mayhem. Each show featured a celebrity guest star, who were either personal friends of Henson, or his manager. The Muppet Show lasted for 5 years, and 120 episodes, two spin offs, and several movies.

Theme Song:

It's time to play the music
It's time to light the lights
It's time to meet the Muppets
On the Muppet Show tonight

It's time to put on makeup
It's time to dress up right
It's time to raise the curtain
On the Muppet Show tonight

Why do we always come here
I guess we'll never know
It's like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show

And now lets get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started
On the most sensational

Inspirational
Celebrational
Muppetational
This is what we call the Muppet Show!

Not only was the Muppet Show hilarious, but it wasn't just a kid's show. I see things in it that I can appreciate now that I totally missed as a kid. It also had a few things you might not see on TV nowadays, like Alice Cooper getting Gonzo to sell his soul to the devil.

It still amazes me as to how expressive the Muppets could be.
