I can't say I've ever been a regular viewer of SNL. I've see reruns of several shows, and clips of the better skits. When you see the shows, you can see that the ratio of hit to miss is a bit high.

All these performers could not wait to get into movies; but the irony is that their work on this show is probably superior to anything they did later.

There are exceptions, of course.

for fans of snl, i would highly recommend Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests. it's a great read and includes the perspective of pretty much every major player in the show's history who is still living. the only big star who declined to be interviewed is eddie murphy.

How old is that? Is it like a coffee table sized hardback, because I used to have a copy of that, if it is.

The season debut last night was great... I might be in the minority, but I think the show was great last year, and is headed in the right direction this year... I think people hold the show to too high a standard, and don't give it a chance... The opening sketch was dry, but funny... The water bottle sketch had me ROFLing... Brian Williams showing up for Weekend Update... Airport Security sketch was hilarious... Dane Cook's monologue was great... There were some stinkers, but there was a lot of great content too... Enough that I'm optimistic for the show this year...

Yeah, it sounds like it's not the same thing. It was a large coffee table book, with lots of pictures of the casts and characters from 1975 to 2000.

The huge difference between SNL in the old days and SNL now is that the ensemble feel of the show is long dead. For years, the cast used to put their energy into the show to make everybody look good and as a result, the show was good. For at least the last decade (and really longer), the cast is simply using the show as a vehicle to make themselves look good so they could move on to bigger things. When you have guys like David Spade, Tim Meadows, and Chris Kattan starring in movies, it painfully illustrates how poor the show has gotten.

As for this year's season premiere, it was a decent show. Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph continue to shine, but Poehler suffers from overexposure. Darrell Hammond has been the most consistent guy on that show for several years, but nobody realizes it because he's always under make-up doing impressions. I think Kristen Wiig could be huge on that show. She does some incredible impersonations (highlighted moreso last season), she's got great timing, and she's pretty cute to boot. Also, Bill Hader is another great impressionist. His Al Pacino is hilarious, and his Vincent Price last season sounded dead on. Their problem is gonna be getting past no-talent, camera-hogging hacks like Will Forte and Horatio Sanz.

Horatio was only funny alongside Jimmy Fallon, because he never once did a skit with Fallon without breaking out laughing. But Horatio is gone now, along with Tina, Rachel Drachdt, and Chris Parnell. IMO all these guys were funny, but had overstayed their welcome. (Will Forte and Seth Meyers are probably in the same boat. Forte's bits were once hilarious, between the politician he did on WU, and "the Falconer," but the best things hes done of late were the Spelling Bee skit last year and the water bottle skit last saturday.) Thank God Finesse Mitchell is gone too.. He was never funny... And that leaves the show with a more managable 11 cast members...

All the fresh blood on the show is great so far... Samberg really arrived with "The Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia," Hader's Pacino and Price impersanations are spot-on and put to good use, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis are also very funny. Those 4 are the future of the show.

Kenan Thompson is baggage... He has no delivery, and his recurring house music sketch last year was just plain awful...

The waterbottle bit last sat was pretty funny- they managed to milk the bottles falling for just as long as they could for it to be funny without it ceasing to be funny.

And the airport security sketch was good too.

He doesn't do much else that's memorable to me, but I always found Fred Armisen doing "The Prince Show" as one of the funniest skits from last season.

I haven't watched it in *years.* Maybe I'll record it next week.

Youtube.com has some great old SNL sketches...

Hader's Pacino is the stuff of legend.

Dane Cook is crying right now.

He's in his room, sobbing. Screaming.

"I DID MY BEST! I DID MY BEST!! I DID MY *BEST*!!!!"

Many different fluids are falling down his face.

When it's good, it's very good. When it's bad, it's abysmal.

Not a regular viewer.

One of the few truly great, unhinged-bat***t-crazy SNL sketches in years.

The guy deserves all the credit he gets for stuff like the "Duluth" piece and watching him literally having a thrombus as Zell Miller.

The guy deserves all the blame, however, for letting his Bush-stuff go WAY too "safe" and right-down-the-middle.
