Seeing as the new album is coming out today for us lucky people in Europe, I decided to get permission to start a RHCP thread
Known for being influential, crazy, creative and explosive the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Founding members, Anthony Kiedis, Mike "Flea" Balzary, Hillek Slovak and Jack Irons) first burst onto the L.A. music scene in 1983 with their first album
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
.
It was an amazing blast of funk, punk and rock music that was what drew attraction to the Chili Peppers since the beginning. After losing their current guitarist (Jack Sherman) they brought back their original guitarist Hillek Slovak to play on the second album
Freaky Styley
, released in 1985. This contained fan favourites such as
Jungleman
and
Catholic School Girls Rule
.
After touring America, the Chili Peppers set to work on their third studio album
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan
(released in 1987), with original drummer Jack Irons back in the band. Described by critics as the Chili Peppers funkiest work, the main track
Fight Like a Brave
was in tribute to Anthony Kiedis' struggle with drugs and was a testimony to him getting clean. After touring with this new set of songs, the Chili Peppers returned home to Los Angeles.
However, tragedy struck. Before the band could start thinking of recording a fourth album guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose. Not being able to handle the pressure of his friend's death, Jack Irons left the band.
Kiedis and Flea decided to continue the band, and aeventually settled on today's line-up of Chad Smith on drums and John Frusciante on guitar. Their next album,
Mother's Milk
, was recorded and produced with an energetic mixture of funk, rap, metal and jazz, and was released in 1989.
Knock Me Down
(their first top 10 hit) and
Pretty Little Ditty
(which would be later sampled as "Butterfly" by Crazy Town) were the break the Chili Peppers needed to finally enter the mainstream. They progressed to start a successful nine month world tour.
Although Mother's Milk is considered to be a milestone in their career, the Red Hot Chili Peppers usually refrain from performing songs from this album anymore, due to John's dislike of the way he performed.
I will update this as the thread progresses, tired now

Flea sang that actually, but yes it's pretty funny.

Bought Stadium Arcadium!
Just finishing the first CD (Jupiter) now and it's been pretty good. But it's different and seems more John Fruiscante-like.
I'll post again after I listen to the second CD.

I love the Chili's. Stadium Arcadium is awesome. Other than Stadium Arcadium, I've only got their Greatest Hits, which is a damn good album.

Eeh, it's okay. It's really REALLY mellow and I was hoping for something more in the vein of BSSM.
Funky Monks is their best song.

Theyve actually gotten better when they got older and clean. Thats almost never the case - especially creatively.

I agree that they've gotten better after they got clean. Personally I think that Californication and By The Way are their two best albums.
Anyway, Im dying to get this album. Im going to pick it up right after work tomorrow.
How many songs on it (since its a double album and all) ?

Cool, that's a nice amount of tracks, especially considering that it's a double. Alot of times artists will only make each disc 10 or 11 songs when putting out a double album.
Speaking of which, imagine they'd put out a triple album like they'd originally planned ?

I strongly recommend to anybody who likes even a single Chili Pepper's song to buy this album! It's phenomenal! They've brought back the funk, rocking you out and then calming you down and taking you to that elevated state of mind when you listen to an epic song, before ramming some more funk down your throat!
Excellent!

I'm usually at Best Buy on new release Tues to get titles like this but yesterday was crazy for me so I'll pick it up today.
Most of what I've read has been very positive and the album seems to be preferred over the last two which is good. I don't know that they will even top BloodSugarSexMagik IMO but looking forward to the new album.

Im actually listening to it as I type this. Im about half-way through the second disc, 'Mars'.
So far Im really liking both discs. As was said earlier, its a great mix of old their old funk style, newer mellower songs and songs that just rock your socks.

I just listened to the album last night and it's not bad. It's definately an improvement compared to their last one.
