Although I do tend to roll my eyes at professional reviewers, a bad review does not neccessarily mean they have a hidden agenda. Not everyone is going to like this movie. Lots of people on this forum loved Superman Returns, still more found it boring; same goes for some of the Matrix films, and we are all aware of the differences of opinion on the Star Wars prequels.

Nrf-Hrdr posted: I'll probably wait for the DVD with this one, if only so I can give it something of a fair shot. I suspect the movie will be pretty decent, but the near-unprecedented levels of fanboy hysteria it's carrying along with it make it very difficult for me not to loathe it on principle.
This is coming from someone on a Star Wars Board... O...k.

^^Well funnily enough Star Wars fanboy culture in all its tedious forms helped sour that series for me to the extent that, other then Episode III in the theatres, I haven't sat down and watched a Star Wars movie in something like five or six years.
Episode I hysteria was probably worse then Dark Knight hysteria, though the crucial difference here is that I suspect Batman fanboys will get pretty much what they wanted, meaning the shrill hype could just go on and on and on. Unless the film's failure to be the single greatest cinematic achievement of all time leads to a backlash.
As a box-office geek I'm interested in how much money it will pull in though. Here in internet land you might think it's all but a lock to sail past 400 million domestic, but the fanboy love of Batman Begins wasn't really reflected by its take, and I wonder if this one won't be prove to be a bit front-loaded once the opening stampede is over.

^ ^ ^ I think alot of fans of Begins were made via the DVD. Those new fans, who declined to see the movie in theaters fearing another Bat-bomb, will almost certainly be in attendance for the release of the sequel. Attach to those numbers the general population, who are hearing quite a buzz about this movie if they've been at all paying attention, and I think it's safe to say we've got a HUGE hit on our hands -- probably the big winner of the summer or even the year.

^^^ I hear ya.
There's a lot of ways this could go. I'm optimistic though that we won't end up with an enormous disappointment(like some other sequel released this year).
Still, I think it would be silly to pass up on this flick. If only for the fact that parts of it were shot in IMAX. It's kind of a big deal, and, as a movie buff, you may end up regretting not being there to take it all in. That's not to say that you have to attend the midnight showing, but maybe after the crowds have died down. I really think with IMAX being such a popular format to covert to, more and more people are going to follow Nolan's example and start shooting entire films in IMAX (Films other than Warren Miller and nature flicks, that is.)
Of course that's just my opinion...

I agree about the DVD impact. A buddy of mine who rarely sees films at theatres is all pumped for the Dark Knight, and that's solely from renting the DVD, which led him to buy a copy.
I think the Dark Knight will be the # 1 movie of the year, and now that Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull is about to surpass $ 750 million at the world-wide box office, that'll be # 2. Ironman will come in # 3 for the year, it's world-wide total is about $ 565 million. It's been a healthy year for heroes.

Not really. Titantic was allowed to play in theatres for a very, very long time because it was doing so well. Nowadays, with so many movies coming out needing screens, and the lure of DVD money, circumstances in the marketplace conspire for a shorter theatrical window, which reduces box office revenue and playing schedules. Titantic's a truly great film, but it's box office was something of a historical fluke, a perfect storm of circumstances that led to the ultimate box office take.

Titanic will shun its namesake and remain afloat as number one for some time, I think.
TDK will definitely be big, but again, I wouldn't pay much heed to the reviews.

Well if it gives Titanic a run for it's money, that'll mean SW is on the chopping block too...

Exactly. First, The Phantom Menace was going to take out Titanic. Then King Kong. Now the Dark Knight, because certain fans have an overly ardent need for the box office take to validate their own enthusiasm.

The reality is that as far as B.O. goes these days its little more than bragging rights and usually short lived since the top spot of all time is unlikely to be toppled and weekend or monthly grosses seem to get beaten week to week, month to month. As its already been mentioned the life of a movie in a theatrical run is short in recent years. DVD sales rule the industry and tend to be where companies score the biggest chunk of money sometimes being fortunate enough to make up for dismal theatrical sales.
Not to mention its a superficial and unrealistic means to measure the quality of a film. While it may be used to illustrate success or failure (sometimes not terribly accurately) neither of those things necesarily validate the quality anymore.
The industry has changed dramatically since Titanic came out and it can more than likely rest assured that it will stay a top the record.
So really it doesn't matter if TDK makes more or less money than Titanic. All I care about anymore is whether the film will deliver the expected level of quality that so many people are raving about.
