I don't know about beating Titanic overall, but it will clobber Spidey-3 out of the record of opening weekend gross. Another for sure thing is that it's final gross income when all is said and down will be greater than $300 Million. Heck, it will be darn close to $200 million in it's first three days alone. I think it's a sure bet that it will end with no less than $400 million.

There will probably be big money from Midnight showing alone like ROTS too.

My box office formula for the Dark Knight would be Batman Begins + organic audience growth + marketing + Heath Ledger factor.

Batman Begins was not a blockbuster by any reasonable definition: $205 million domestic and $166 foreign for $371 million worldwide. In other words, not all that much more than Iron Man made in the U.S. alone.

If the U.S. - foreign split of the Dark Knight is the same as Batman begins, or similar to Iron Man, then the Dark Knight will not likely make more than $700 million worldwide.

My guess would be about $300 domestic and about $290 foreign - somewhere around $600 million worldwide. A low end blockbuster, given its budget. Maybe $50 million more than Iron Man worldwide. It's possible, however, that the box office value of the all the hype surrounding Heath Ledger's death will give it another $100 million worldwide, for a total close to $700. That would put it about on par with Transformers.

Hi, Lit regular here.

Just got back from a showing (Australia, you see), and I just thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

It's sublime.

I've been looking at the old Batman Begins Amph thread out of curiousity to see what people were saying just prior to seeing the film (much like in this thread, lots of hype and a few more measured, cautious posts), and what people thought right after seeing it. This post from Darth_Ignant caught my eye:

One thing I'd change...make the DA Harvey Dent, obviously don't kill him off, and have him close to Bruce and Rachel. Hell, have him dating Rachel in the next one.

Someone was right on the money!

I think alot of fans of Begins were made via the DVD. Those new fans, who declined to see the movie in theaters fearing another Bat-bomb, will almost certainly be in attendance for the release of the sequel.

I think you might be on to something there. Also, I think a lot of people were mistakingly under the impression that Batman Begins was a prequel. Even today some people think these current BATMAN movies are prequels.

I'm sure Batman Begins did well on DVD. Will that translate into foreign box office for the Dark Knight? The Golden Compass made twice as much money as BB outside the U.S.

As with Casino Royale, Batman Begins suffered an initial dent due to the fact its audience had been badly burned by the franchise, but good legs suggested growing support over the course of its run. The hype shows that the Dark Knight has unified that audience pretty well, which should translate to a massive opening.

But while I fully expect it to be a big hit, I also have a sneaking suspicion that the massive popularity of the new Batman series might prove to be an internet phenomenon not reflected in the wider world. Internet people love brooding and darkness but i'm not sure the general public will be so enthusiastic about a feel-bad blockbuster. Jabba's hits the mark with the domestic vs. worldwide issue - the Batman franchise doesn't have the strongest track record in that respect.

I think your right. Batman begins was not a huge roaring success because many people expected a flop based on the direction Batman had been going after Batman Returns. It's just like the Incredible Hulk. The last Hulk movie left everyone with a very bad taste in the mouth that it really hurt this much better Hulk movie. If the studio would go ahead and make a sequel to The Incredible Hulk, I think it will do much better.

With the DVD sales, The Dark Knight will easily surpass the first one since this new franchise. Not only that, but the passing of Heath Ledger, an the unrelenting viral promotion of the movie will cause TDK to break many of the box office records.

Good Points. I think that with this particular film, there's so much buzz about it, not only on the net, but all over the media, that a lot of people who might not have gone to see it simply because it's a Bat-flick are gonna check it out because of other reasons. Things like The death of Heath Ledger, the Posthumous Oscar talk, the insanely good reviews from notable sources such as Rolling Stone, Ebert & Roeper (sp?), etc...

I have my doubts that it'll be able to take down Titanic, but It's got to take Spidey 3 down. If only to establish at least one decent flick on the highest grossing opening weekend list. I was appalled by the awful flicks that hold the record. They're all the bastard sequels of good flicks. That's just my opinion, of course.

Either way, I think Nolan's really got something here and with people comparing TDK to The Godfather II and Dog Day Afternoon, I think it's gonna draw an enormous crowd. I mean, seriously, when in the history of film has there ever been such a surge in midnight showing ticket sales that theaters have actually had to add additional pre-opening day show times? Maybe I'm blanking, but I can't remember even one.

Even if no records are broken, one thing's for sure... TDK is going to be the biggest movie of '08.

I think the film is going to get a huge number of males aged 13-40 turning up to see it, but the big questions are: will the female demographic turn up? Will it be able to draw families in en masse? If not, how big a hit can it be?

I want this film to do well, I think that it will do well, but I don't know that it will do the huge numbers that people on the net are predicting. Generally the films that do huge get a very wide demographic, a family demographic, and this is a dark movie.

I think Jabbadabbado's estimates are probably about right. When I see this incredible hype from fans on the net I remember Serenity... has there ever been a movie loved by so many on the net that did so little at the box-office?

I think $300 domestic sounds about right. I have my fingers crossed for more, $400 would be great, but it may be too dark for the average moviegoer.

There's no question The Dark Knight will do well, but do you honestly expect it to make more money than The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2??

For the record, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will be the highest grossing film of 2008, worldwide.
