I think the film is going to get a huge number of males aged 13-40 turning up to see it, but the big questions are: will the female demographic turn up? Will it be able to draw families in en masse? If not, how big a hit can it be?

I want this film to do well, I think that it will do well, but I don't know that it will do the huge numbers that people on the net are predicting. Generally the films that do huge get a very wide demographic, a family demographic, and this is a dark movie.

I think Jabbadabbado's estimates are probably about right. When I see this incredible hype from fans on the net I remember Serenity... has there ever been a movie loved by so many on the net that did so little at the box-office?

I think $300 domestic sounds about right. I have my fingers crossed for more, $400 would be great, but it may be too dark for the average moviegoer.

I think there's a lot of female's interested in this. It's not much but all my female friends are more interested in this than in Mamma Mia.

Batman Begins was the first film I ever saw where I walked out of the theatre and immediately purchase a ticket for the next showing.

The midnight screening is already sold out in all the theaters within 10 miles of my house. That is pretty impressive.

Check this out.

In a recent MovieTickets.com survey, moviegoers aware of The Dark Knight expressed "wannasee" during its opening weekend in all four age groups polled: 24 & Under – 98%, 25 to 34 – 92%, 35 to 44 – 78%, 45 to 59 – 66%. In addition, the survey found that 86% of males and 76% of females polled said they intend to see it during its opening weekend.

Meanwhile Fandango (which sells tickets to more than 15,000 theater screens) reports that Warner Bros' The Dark Knight has grabbed a whopping 90% of all ticket sales for the upcoming weekend show. That's incredible considering it was still only Tuesday.

If that 90% figure for the entire weekend is true, this is going to be huge.

If The Dark Knight wants to break the American opening weekend record set by Spider-Man 3, it will need at least

$60 million tomorrow,
$52 million on Saturday
$40 million on Sunday.

Given the level of hype about the midnight previews, I think the Friday record will fall. I would not be surprised at all if The Dark Knight sets a one day opening record above $70 million.

On the flip side, the conventional collective box office wisdom is giving this an opening weekend of about $136 million, so less than Spider-Man 3. And Dark Knight is opening on fewer total screens (9,000) than Spider-Man 3 (10,000).

I watched it last night and this film is so chaotic and unrelenting. Just when you think there's a break in the clouds and things are going to get better, they take a turn and end up ten times worse. Health Ledger's performance gave me goose bumps, if he doesn't get serious consideration for an Oscar then the whole establishment is a joke. Role turns like this one are the reason people become actors.

Unless the film is exceedingly popular AMPAS tends not to give consideration to genre films of this sort. There are exceptions of course (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars) but like I said they were exceedingly popular and made a big mark in the annals of film history. I sincerely hope Dark Knight breaks through that barrier (and demonstrates en mass that Comic Book material can be more than children's literature), but part of me doubts it.

I can see Ledger getting a nod, if he can blow away more than just fanboys and critics.

I've been hearing a lot of that: it's the feel bad movie of the summer. "There Will Be Blood" in a bat suit.

Actually, it's But lets not forget, The Dark Knight has more going for it. It has Heath Ledger's final performance, I believe it may have more IMAX theater showings than Spider-Man 3, I think TDK has been promoting itself relentlessly unlike Spidey-3, and unlike Spidey-3, TDK has showings at 3 AM and 6 AM in most major cities which are also selling out. I think the Dark Knight will edge it out in the end with probably $160 million this weekend, beating Spidey-3 by at the very least $5 million.

With 9,200 screens, TDK basically needs a $17,000 per screen average for the weekend to take the record. It certainly isn't impossible, but weekend demand will be *extremely* front loaded. The Friday numbers (including the all night screenings) will make your eyes bug out. And then there will be a huge Friday to Saturday drop.

Well the midnight showings have already grossed 2 mil. And it is opening on a record 9200 screens in North America alone.

It's going to do just fine. It doesn't need to make the most money to be the best movie of the year.
