I, on the other end of the spectrum, am hoping that they keep everything as real as possible. I loved the way they did the characters in Begins so that they were all almost 100% believable. I wouldn't even mind at all if the Joker ended up with no make-up at all.

If they do a Joker completely without makeup, i would throw stuff at the screen.

Joker can have realism and makeup if they explore certain areas of his psyche. Such as his homosexual tendencies resulting from his long obsession with batman. They want to make joker seem insane, they could take a note from Arkham asylum and make the character with mother issues that motivate him to wear tight purple suits, flower lapels, and wear extensive makeup. You can make the white faced joker work in a realistic way, that will be entertaining, albeit not a very good interpretation of the comics, but a Joker with no make up at all, is just terrible.

I can't see them doing Joker without makeup - noone would pay to see that. But I have faith in Nolan's choices. Some people questioned Bale as Batman, but he turned out to be awesome. I just hope that Harley shows up grin

Hmm, not sure how I feel about Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker. Its definitely an intriguing choice, though.

Here's a manipulation I did of Ledger as The Joker.
Some of you may have already seen this in the Sci-Fi Forum thread.

Yes I saw it. Even with your manipulations, he still just doesn't look right to me.

The manipulation looks good, but something tells me that theyre probably not going to go with the traditional Joker look for these movies. Im sure he'll have some makeup on but I think they'll try to give Ledger some kind of realism in the role, you know ? Less comic-booky, if that makes any sense.

No I absolutley know what your talking about. My manip shows that Ledger could look like what most people would consider a traditional Joker. I imagine Ledger's Joker look will be dialed way back. However I think there's some things you just shouldn't change and that would be the green hair, white skin and maybe the red lips. The Joker still has to look like The Joker IMO.

I agree 100%. Nolan's approach to the first one was to give it a more realistic
approach (not that Batman Begins was a documentary!) but I'll think he'll continue
that here. And I think that would include the approach to the Joker.

Ledger is a superb actor with range. I've been increasingly impressed with the
last half dozen films he's done. He's trying all kinds of roles and generally
succeeding. And I think he and Bale will make great adversaries.

He could actually could pull off the pre-Joker look pretty well(if you went by the Killing Joke timeline).

Perhaps, they are going by the Joker's original orgin from the comics? I mean, at the end of Batman Begins, Batman had been given the Joker's calling card, so they're obviously not planning on having Batman "create" the Joker in this series of films(thank god).

Apparently, the movie is going to tell the Joker's origin story in flashbacks, in a way comparable to the way they handled Bruce's past in BB.

You mean the origin in the comics, primarily the Killing Joke which you use a picture from, where Batman creates the Joker?

Man, this is the BB series, Batman Begins, and now Brokeback Batman.

Crispin Glover would make an amazing Joker, however I heard on "the information highway" that there were talks of Robin Williams being the Joker.

Thank god it will not be Robin Williams. Another over the top Joker is not what this film needs.
Ledger is a very good actor, and that is the main thing. You could probably make up any actor to look "Jokeresque", it's all in the performance.
I am glad Nolan went with his own judgement, instead of a lot of the names who were being tossed around on the Internet. Too many of them seemed "Just a recycled Jack Nicholson Over The Top Joker" to me. And if they are going with the Frank Miller concept..and they apparetnly are....that would be wrong.
More of a quiet, sadistic giggling and less over the top bellylaughing.

This title is a clue, too, possibly indicating that the film will end on a downer with the Joker beating Batman ( he IS his arch nemesis ) - setting up the final film, The Dark Knight Returns.

^^
I like the idea of the Joker getting the best of Batman.

I also am a bit hesitant on Ledger. I guess I really do not know enough about the comics to visualize The Joker with a different personality, but based on the feel of the first film I can see him being more sadistic.
