Chichen Itza is the largest ruined Mayan City in the Yucatan Peninsula. This was the location of a ball game was the Mayan idea of sports, and on the carvings on the buildings show players wearing heavily protective clothing and carrying the severed heads of their opponents.

Built on a granite island that is cut off from the mainland at high tide, this abbey/fortress was important during the 100 Years War. Became a prison during the French Revolution (thank God it wasn't destroyed), and is now a museum/historical site.

Stave churches--named for the huge wooden connecting posts--are almost exclusive to Norway...though there is one in Sweden and one in Poland. There are 28 in Norway, of which this is the best example. Carved dragon heads decorate the roof.

Because of the proximity of the Scottish border, this cathedral was built with an accompanying castle. The exterior of the cathedral is gothic, the interior Romanesque.

The town of Laibela in Northern Ethiopia is home to 11 unique monolithic churches hewn out of solid volcanic rock with the roofs at ground level of which St. George is the finest example. It is the only one not connected to the others by passages or bridges.
