I'll actually be vacationing near Siena next week. I've been to the cathedral once (only outside) the piazza around it is impressive, can't say the pictures Zaz posted make me want to go inside (especially not when they charge admission, as do many Italian churches).

They say the inside is beautiful...but those horrid horizontal stripes don't exalt you to the heavens like La Chappelle; the colours are dull; and the bell tower just sits there like a large port-a-potty. Apparently Italian Gothic never went airbourne.

At this point, castles were becoming obsolete because of cannon; this was built more as a home than a defense element.

My first thought was flooding.

It's a haven for illegal immigrants and the Mafia. As soon as we stepped off the bus we were surrounded by about 20 people trying to sell us fake watches and other assorted rubbish, who followed us all the way to the tower. Around the tower itself is a 'market' which is really only several hundred of the same types accosting every tourist repeatedly. Our tour guide stated that it was better than usual because it was raining.

Pisa's heyday was 800 years ago. I seem to remember hearing that the town's population has barely changed since then...

Thanks for the tip, Marcus, we were actually thinking of driving up there next week.

Architect: Unknown

Completed: 1390

Location: Granada, Spain

Style/Period: Moorish

[i\Al Hambra[/i] is Arabic for 'the red.' This building complex began as a fortress, mosque and palace for the local Muslim rulers. However, the design owes much to the local Christian fortresses. When Granada was reconquered in 1492, King Charles V demolished a part of the complex so that Pedro Machuca could build a new Renaissance style palace. But several buildings survive as do the water gardens.

Many buildings in Spain were used in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, and in the style of this Palace. Looks familiar.

Designed to be easily erected from dry stones, they were also easier demolished, so that taxes could not be collected on them.

The spot where the monarchs are traditionally crowned and some of them are entombed. Outstanding example of English Gothic.

First started in 1040 by Edward the Confessor, and extensively rebuilt by Henry III in the French-inspired Gothic style. Completed in the reign of Richard II. Later additions are the Lady Chapel (Henry VII) and the completion of the Western towers.

Doesn't have the 'spectacularity' (yes I just made that up) of La Chappelle, but the weight of history in this building is amazing.
