I love the fan vaulting in the chapel at the rear...fan vaulting is a rather impressive architectural technique, especially considering the technology they had to work with.

The English ones are generally built of that pale soapy-looking stone. This isn't bad, just a bit dull. But it certainly isn't black and white stripes. Thank God.

haha, I took a friend to Westminster last year...we hadn't seen each other in a long time and spent the entire tour giggling and making somewhat rude jokes... somehow I'm not surprised that I don't remember much of the architecture!
I do like the fan vaults, though. And all the tombs of famous people.

I remember during Princess Diana's funeral, I read a lot about Westminster Abbey and I was amazed at the history of it, and how long it's been there!
When I go to London, it's first on my list of touristy places to go. Anything that's lasted 900 years, I want to see. The pics are fantastic. I'd also like to see St. Pauls.
I also was reading recently about the small section of London that contains the financial district...and it's connection to Westminster was quite interesting.

Yeah, me either. Wow.
Maybe you should have just gone to a corner pub and admired the architecture there over a couple of pints.

Next: Changdokkung Palace
Completed: 1405
Location: Korea
Style/Period: Medieval Korean
Built by King Taejong, this is the best and most characteristic of the surviving Chosun palaces.

Next: The Forbidden City
Completed: 1420 (begun 1405)
Location: Beijing, China
Style/Period: Chinese Ming Dynasty
Built as the Ming Emperors' palace after it was decided to establish the capital at Beijing, this is a complex of buildings of various stripes.
Seen this myself and very impressive it is.

Next: Ca' d'Oro Palazzo
Architects: Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon
Completed: 1436
Location: Grand Canal, Venice, Italy
Style/Period: Gothic/Venetian
Known as 'the Golden House' because of its now-faded gilt decoration, and distinctly Moorish/Byzantine in inspiration.

Next: Florence Cathedral
Architects: Filippo Brunelleschi et al.
Completed: 1436 (begun 1296)
Location: Florence, Italy
Style/Period: Italian Gothic/Renaissance
Built over 140 years by three different architects. The piece de resistance is the bell cupola, constructed in herringbone brickwork without a supporting framework.
Not bad, but Italian Gothic does not move me. The interior is especially rather blah.

This was a rather amazing feat of engineering, something you can appreciate from inside. But it's not particularly 'beautiful', I would agree.

I don't like the separate bell towers.
