The Doges were the elected rulers of the medieval Venetian City-state. The palace was a multi-functional building; it included living quarters for the doge, as well as chambers, courts, offices and prison cells. Built in two stages, one part facing the Lagoon, the other, St. Mark's Square. Because the ground was prone to subsidence, the Venetians built squatter buildings to reduce the weight.

Next: Albi Cathedral
Architect: Unknown
Completed: 1480
Location: Albi, France
Style/Period: Southern Gothic
The town of Albi in Southern France was the centre of the Albigensian heresy, which was brutally suppressed by the Catholic Church. That fact is reflected in the fortress-like exterior and the narrow windows. There is a Spanish influence in the wide hall-like nave and the internal buttresses.

Completed: 1486 (main work)
Location: Milan, Italy
Style/Period: Gothic
Started 1386, and continued sporadically for over 500 years. Introduced the High Gothic style to Italy. Can house 40,000.
The Italian style is just not my thing. It's earthbound. La Chapelle forever!

The remarkable thing with the Milan cathedral is that it's so shiny and white when you stand close to it.

Albi Cathedral is odd-looking, yet I still like it better.

Built by two popes, this cathedral has some nice exterior touches, but it's low to the ground, and has those crappy, pedestrian horizontal stripes typical of Italian Gothic.

Zaz, I think you have a typo -- isn't it Orvieto.
I'm more interested in the city for it's great white wine, to be honest. The only one of the striped cathedrals I really like is Florence, where the stripes aren't quite so dark. The dark brown/black ones here, Siena and elsewhere make them too dark.

You are right...I corrected it.
I just don't like the Italian Gothic style---the stripes (ugh!) nor the stupid-looking isolated bell towers.
