The Great Wall is definitely one of the most iconic buildings that we have on the globe, maybe even the most iconic one.

Also I want to jump back to Olavinlinna, or Olofsborg. The name of the castle has a really interesting background. It comes from Olof Axelsson (Tott), one of 9 brothers in a family that totally dominated Scandinavian politics in the middle of the 15th century. Olof was the governor of Finland but died, leaving parts of his fiefdoms to his brother. Only problem was that in Scandinavia fiefdoms were not hereditary, so there was quite a bit of crisis following that. Olofsborg was then built as a bit of statement by one of his brothers, Erik.

Also Olavinlinna is the place for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, which is one of the more famous outdoor opera festivals in Europe.

I was hoping you'd give us some background on that one, Obi.

I guess I missed it because of the name, I know it as Olofsborg, Nyslott or Savonlinna, I hadn't heard Olavinlinna, even if I should have understood which castle it was.

Olavinlinna is also really on the frontier. It was part of the Swedish trying to move the Finnish border further and further east, which made the Russians less happy. One of the Swedish regents in the end of the 15th century even falsified a peace treaty that all of a sudden gave us a lot more land than previous. Olavinlinna was of course a way of showing the Swedish presence in the area, the official reason was to protect the proper catholic farmers from the evil, heathen (orthodox) Russians though.

The book uses what sounds like the Finnish (?) version of the name.

Yes, Olavinlinna and Olofsborg is the same, Nyslott/Savonlinna is the name of the town surrounding the castle. I honestly thought the name on the castle was Savonlinna, since it's the name of the opera festival that takes place there.
