This is a thread for discussion of Sports Broadcasting...on television, on radio, in books, in newspapers, and on the web...

The obvious place to start, I suspose, would be the World Cup, which is currently ongoing. (Are there riots in your city during the broadcasts? How lame are the ESPN commentators? (a. very; b. hugely; c. extraordarily; choose one)

I've been trying to catch the world cup whenever I can, and I always feel like I'm missing something due to the fact that there are Americans calling the games that I can see. It'd be pretty cool if the games called by Latin American announcers instead. tongue ESPN just really isn't cut out for calling soccer.

Damn, you should've started with Baseball, then I would've had something good to say about ESPN. sad

(Are talking just ESPN or could we possibly get into other networks that carry other sports?)

Any networks you want. Any sport you want.

Right now the sports are soccer, tennis (Wimbleton), and the Tour de France (a huge, nasty scandal has now hit the fan).

The problem with ESPN and soccer, is that the American announcers don't appear to know anything about the game. One Brit guy on the local radio station said he used the German broadcast feed, which he described as matter-of-fact

In tennis, I still love listening to John McEnroe and Dick Enberg. Obviously McEnroe has the experience in having played the game and you still get that sense of fire in him when he's calling action. He seems to take great pride in tennis and his frustration with erratic play of some players and the underappreciation that someone like Roger Federer gets keeps him needling the fans which I find funny. Enberg is just a class act in anything he calls, but for some reason, the pomp of Wimbledon goes perfect with Enberg's grace. I think Enberg could call a monster truck rally and it'd seem high-brow. Enberg's vision of sports goes beyond just the action of the field, court, etc. He can encompass the fans, the passion, the weather, the struggle, the joy, and every minute detail into his commentary. I can watch a sport I don't necessarily care for if Enberg is on the mic.

McEnroe is amusing and he cuts through the cant and the crap, which all you can ask.

I hear the English press is in hysterics over the World Cup. The local radio expert (who has a suspiciously Brit accent) described the Portugese team as 'lying, cheating, diving, thieving wankers.' Great sportsmanship, guys!

Which Station is that???

What I'm happy about is that TSN and Sportsnet, do there own analysis but when it comes to game time they turn it over the the experience British announcers. ESPN need to get some Brits.

Also the Vancouver Canucks have three of the best announcers ever. Between John Shorthouse, Tommy Larshard(sp?) Past Radio in discussion for future and Jim Hughston our TV color commentary. Amazing.

Ha Vancouver slappy, eh? :P

Soccer and broadcasting experts agree: no one understands how Vic Rauter still has a job.

Broadcasting is fast becoming a lost art. I blame Fox sports for this. When they took over the rights to broadcasting football in North America, they took it upon themselves to singlehandedly change the landscape of sports broadcasting.

While flashy at first, it's now pretty much eliminated the legendary broadcasters. Instead, you have a bunch of cookie-cutter clones who all look and sound the same, don't understand that you don't have to fill EVERY WAKING SECOND of a game with commentary, and who quite often come across as being clueless about the sports that they are supposedly experts of.

Some of them seem to have trouble keeping quiet, no question. Then there's the problem, on HNIC on CBC at least, of homerism. The rest of the country is forced to watch the Leafs, which is cruel and unusual punishment...

Well as a North Carolinian, I watched the Canes on Fox Sports South and they have Tripp Tracey who is also an ultimate homer. I think we all expect that sort of thing in college sports broadcasting, particularly with the tons of viewing options and the diluted pool of objective (or even truly qualified) broadcasters. But in the pros, I still prefer at least an attempt at objectivity.

No it's not. happy

Anyways, Bob Cole really needs to retire, I mean he's losing it every game. For instance, there will be a delayed penalty against Edmonton, and when they touch the puck he'll say the penalty is going to Carolina.

Oh, yes it is. tongue Apparently, it's even worse for Ottawa fans.

Of course, Toronto may improve next year, I haven't kept track of their signings. But there is no doubt that at least four of the other Canadian teams are better than they are (both Alberta teams, Ottawa and Montreal), yet we see proportionally far too much of them on CBC.

And Bob Cole does seem a little confused at times.

Actually, NHL.com has a terrifc thing on their website; you can listen to the opposing team's radio feed while you watch the game. It's a great cure for homerism.

Coming up next week: The British Open. Hopefully, we will get the British feed with those hushed Brit voices and eccentric commentary.

Today the Vancouver Canucks that they will be seen a whopping 13 times on HNIC this season.

Remember HNIC has a double header each Saturday night.

Wonder how many times the Leafs will be seen?

I don't really watch HNIC. They are the most Biased broadcasters ever. Especially toward the Leafs in the Playoffs.

But I'll watch the Canucks games. Other than that. not too much. And now they have Triple headers, featuring the Sens.
