I love Bunk - " Dont even think about comin' back a murder, you decomposin mother****** ". Hell I like all the characters on that show - good, bad, or indifferent.

Yea, Bunk is one of my favorites. Everything that comes out of Wendell Pierce's mouth is pure gold. But everyone is so great on the show - from major characters to the most minor- its really hard picking favorites.

I especially like Bodie and Cutty, too. Im curious to see what theyre arcs will be like this season.

There playing the second episode of season 4 on demand, also. I wonder if this will be the trend for the entire season. I think its great but it is kinda counter-productive from a Nielsen standpoint. The did alot of unconventional things with this season of The Wire come to think about it, like releasing the entire season for critical screening instead of the first few episodes, which is customary. I guess they really want the television art and science people to take it seriously, which they absolutely shouldve been doing for the last four years.

Very positive review in EW this week: "Season 4 of HBO's "The Wire"--the best series on TV, period--is brutal and brilliant."

Oh yea, I havent read one negative review on The Wire this season, and probably wont, either. The critics love this show and always have, but they seem to really been enamored with it this season.

And as far as the On Demand thing goes, Sev, yea, every week theyre going to show it a week ahead of the regular HBO Sunday premieres. A risky move, yes, but one that HBO wanted to try because they say that they have a new way to account for On Demand viewings and they feel that this will help the ratings, plus I guess theyre counting on the diehards watching episodes mutliple times. Reaction over at the official HBO forums is decidedly mixed, mostly because alot of subscribers dont have On Demand in their area, but if this move will ultimately be what helps The Wire come back for a fifth and final season than Im all for it.

And speaking of On Demand...

Anyway, finally saw the latest episode On Demand a little while ago, and, as always, there was tons going on and waaaay too much to talk about it one post. It was nice seeing Valchek, Cutty, Bubs and even Clay Davis, with his classic 'sheeeeeet' when Sydnor issued the subpeonas. Speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see how Royce reacts to the pressure from Davis and the other named in the indictments. Does he allow the investigation to proceed or does he make Burrell come down on the Unit ? Oh, and on a slightly different note, Im really worried for Michael, which is scares me since this is only the second episode...

"The Wire" is alright, but I think it's far over-rated.

I caught for the first time yesterday. I liked it a lot but it was a little confusing getting some of the characters straight. So I'm going to catch up with the dvd for the first three seasons.

Oh, yea, I highly recommend watching the first three seasons before this one if its at all possible. It'll make youre overall experience that much more enjoyable besides getting you familiar with the characters and all of the myriad plot threads.

Well, as far as Michael goes - hes either going to be a hitman or hes not.

Ive got the bad feeling that he will be, although if he does he's probably smart enough to run his own thing one day just like Marlo.

EDIT : Just read over on the official HBO boards that The Wire WILL return for a fifth season !!! Check out the article here.

I think a large part of the shows real world relevance is making inner city characters like Marlo, Avon, and Stringer what they really are and were never before portrayed as in popular cinema - brilliant men, albeit criminal - but mostly criminal due to circumstance, and with the exception of Avon ( a pure gangster ) looking for a way out. Ironic tragedy on the level of the Greeks and Shakespeare. The Wire opens your eyes to the racism thats in Hollywood, too, because when you see these characters in action you realize almost every African American criminal on film before them is extreme stereotype and even cartoonish. Theyre almost never portrayed as genius masterminds as they are in The Wire, which is obviously what they are if you sat down and really thought about the scope of the market they are trying to corner. Thats what you get when a show or movie is actually written by ex cops, retired crooks, and crime reporters and not some fly by night screen writer.

Exactly, and that was one of the reasons why Stringer's death last season was so poignant (and, in a way, kind of sad), because it proved that the drug game and the world men like Stringer inhabit wont allow itself to be reformed.

I watched last weeks show and enjoyed it a lot. Also if you can believe it I got my wife Kelly to watch it too!

She really loved the piss balloons scene.

Now the trick is going to be if I can get her to watch tonights show or if last week was just a fluk.
