Just a little too long, but much more effective than usual, yes. You want to see it.

Zaz doesn't give out many high marks on trailers, so this bodes well.

I find trailers hook you, up until the half way point, then they unhook you by showing way too much.

I fully agree.

It occurs to me that this trailer actually gets the jump on the film itself in building the mystique of Keyser Soze.

In a world...

The Usual Suspects Trailer from 1995

Can anyone make out what Benecio Del Toro says in this?

Something "for real".

It's a pretty effective trailer, though the narration detracts and distracts from it- it doesn't seem naturally attached to the visuals or story- the trailer would pretty much work without it.

And that's true of a lot of trailers, now that I think about it.

No more love for the Usual Suspects trailer? Mmmm. thinking

Okay, let's move on.

This trailer will probably stun a lot of you. It sure shocked me. This is one of the absolute best, most expensive and most innovative and ambitious sci-fi films of the 1950s. Even the trailer was pretty remarkable, for the 1950s.

The Forbidden Planet Theatrical Trailer from 1956

There's several interesting things about this trailer, can you spot them?

Not that often, IMO- here it's either just the wrong voice or trying to force an extended poster tag line into a vocal performance where the pacing of the prases as spoken don't quite align with the editing pace of the trailer (or the footage itself).

Come to think of it, it might have worked beautifully if they had taken the narration and simply put it to text between or over shots.

Ahem. I wonder if George Lucas saw this trailer?

Indeed it is. ESPECIALLY considering it was made in the mid-fifties. Even the trailer conveys that.

Well Zaz, let's see, the trailer and the movie came out in 1956, and in 1956 George Lucas was 12 years old, so yeah, it does seem based on the trailer content that Lucas must have seen it and been influenced by it.

The thing that impressed me was the animation. I understand that Disney was called to provide the optical effects such as the ID monster, because there was no other way to achieve the effect the film makers were going for. I was impressed by how well the animation has held up. George Lucas wasn't the only person who was influenced by Forbidden Planet. There are direct references to this film in Babylon 5 too.
