Admittedly when I saw the film as a kid, I only knew it was about and boy and a horse stuck on an island together - the later parts of the film with Mickey Rooney and the race were all a complete surprise to me. So it's possible I'm probably reacting negatively to the trailer as it exposes all that from the get-go.

I recall having the same initial reaction when I saw the Black Stallion. In fact, I thought the whole film would be on the island, since I'd never read the book. The trailer does kind of wipe out that suspense. This is similar to the situation with the trailer for Castaway, you know going into the movie that he gets off the island because of the trailer. Not good. Save something for the audience to discover for heaven's sake.

Caleb Deschanel's cinematography on this film is extraordinarily beautiful. I thought it was interesting they mentioned it in the trailer's narration...it is a film of great beauty and powerful images.

Honestly though, sometimes when I watch a trailer, I think the goal of the people making the trailer is to discourage people from seeing the film, or to destroy their enjoyment of it.

The first thing I would do is can the narration; then halve the length.

Canning the narration, in this case, is a good idea. The images are so powerful they speak for themselves. The narration seems superfluous.

Agreed - getting rid of the narration would definitely be better.

I've had second thoughts about this trailer. thinking

I'm not sure having only the footage from the island segments would have fairly represented the movie. After all, the horse becomes an extraordinary racing animal.

Unlike for example Castaway, this movie is not so much about being shipwrecked on an island as it is the relationship between the boy and the horse, and how the Black Stallion fulfills his potential on the race track.

I think my earlier judgement may have been premature.

I say dump the shipwreck footage all together. If you come to the movie fresh you don't know that they get shipwrecked. Unlike "Castaway" the importance of surviving the island isn't the focus of the film. Its the bond between the boy & the horse that is most important.

Watching some of these old trailers has been fun. Many times they go on too long & give away an awful lot. I think these days the teasers can often look a lot better than full trailer & sometimes the film itself. Speaking of "Castaway" I loved that teaser when I first saw it & I was appalled months later when I saw the full trailer.

Wow, was Disney scared or what? That trailer is definitely pitched to adults.

Adults? They showed clips of Beauty and the Beast and 101 Dalmatians building up to Nightmare. Seems to me that would appeal to kids. Does anyone else agree with Zaz?

But the narrator refers to various innovations of animation displayed in said films... not something kids typically look for when enjoying a movie.

Yes, of all the studio executives in town, the ones at Disney would be the most nervous about a "dark" film for kids, and I suppose the trailer reflects that. Though their fears turned out to be unfounded, it's a classic now.

One last look at this Nightmare Before Christmas Trailer.

The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993 Teaser Trailer

Now we have the very first glimpse the world saw of Robert Zemeckis's 1985 film, Back to the Future. It's the teaser trailer.

Back to the Future Tease!

So what's the verdict my fine movie experts? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Well, I was going to complain how little the trailer showed (yes yes I know it's a teaser, but damn it barely showed anything apart from Michael J Fox and the "30 years" line - even the DeLorean is never fully shown; only windows and doors).

But this is Robert Zemeckis we're talking about, so we should probably be all grateful he didn't reveal the whole friggin plot. tongue

I guess it promotes some interest, but I think the actual theatrical trailer is much better (though once again i think the narration lets it down).

(however the best BTTF trailer by far IMHO was the one used for the DVD release of the trilogy (complete with excellent usage of Huey Lewis' The Power of Love): BTTF Trilogy DVD Trailer)

I love this one. Generally I am a big fan of teasers...they sell the movie without giving anything away...well if they are done right I should say. This one, as far as I am concerned, is done right. Its mysterious and vague, has a nice build up with obscure sci-fi gadgetry, and ends with a bang, leaving you wanting more, but only giving you a very small taste. I would love to go back to a day when the movie didn't exist for me and see this trailer fresh.
