The mercifully brief teaser trailer not only deftly intrigues the audience, but it capitalizes on Michael J. Fox's huge popularity at that time from the TV show, Family Ties. Not only was the overall trailer unusual, but it must have been a shock when he appeared at the end.

I am surprised they didn't try to milk Spielberg's name as well, though I suppose just attaching his name alone would have been enough.

The BTTF teaser was cute. However I think it works better after you have seen the film. There used to be teasers that would have its own footage specifically shot just for the teaser but this practice seems pretty rare these days. The last one I can think of was the pulled Spider-Man one.

I think the DVD trilogy trailer is mediocre. I used to teach editing and this trailer is pretty much what students would be doing. It works but its nothing special.

IIRC the teaser for Abram's Trek was stuff not intended for the film (or at the very least I don't recall it ever being used).

Right! Good call. I forgot about that one. I remember reading that Abrams shot that footage specifically for the teaser. I think Abrams has a good feel for this stuff. The "Cloverfield" teaser was a lot of fun and there was also a surreal Lost promo (I don't know how much he had to do with this one) with the entire cast dancing on the beach.

Good teaser- I always find "original" teasers to be special gems. Not every big movie should make one, but if it's clever or inventive enough, they can be excellent (see: T3's logo teaser which, by leveraging the real Terminator music, evpoked more emotion and sense of awesomeness than the actual movie did, which did not use the music).

Plus teasers like this provide a double-sense of anticipation- not only do you want to see the movie, but also the next trailer for that movie (see: ID4).

I also agree that the DVD trailer is kinda weak- it's not terrible, nor empty-cheesy like the real theatrical trailer, but there's no theme or pattern to the clips being used (except for the skateboard/hoverboard bit towards the end) and it's rather disconjointed.

I'm not absolutely sure, but it sounds to me like the music in the BTTF teaser trailer is from the 80s film Risky Business.

What do you think?

I knew Zaz would love that one. wink

I get the impression Zaz's ideal movie trailer would be a black screen with the film title and release date on it in a helvetica font for 60 seconds. wink

I think Zaz would allow a score for that though. Music is an important element.

I agree with him though, basically lots of trailers spill the beans and ruin the film.

Maybe the original Superman trailer is up his alley. Just flying through clouds & the actors' credits.

You mean this one Django?

Superman Teaser Trailer

You can't get much more minimalist than that!

I still prefer this one though.

I wasn't ever a huge fan of the Superman trailer. I get that it was more of an announcement trailer, before they had much of anything shot and nothing worthwhile to show, but after waiting how many years to see Superman done on the big screen with a big budget with the potential of bringing to life such an iconic character, to not see him at least fly a little is disappointing.

Personally I adore the Superman Returns teaser (I am sure I have said that before here). Its a great one that shows almost nothing of the plot but with just John Williams Music (the theme from Krypton...incredibly powerful) and Brando's voice you are pulled back to the original film again as they remind of the themes that are ever present and significant in both films (the father son relationship, that Superman can be more than just a hero he can be an inspiration). Its moving to me just sitting here hearing it in my head. And thats without the visuals (some of which are great and very important to what Brando is saying). So it brings you back to Superman, and reminds you what is important without telling you anything about the story really.

I agree with you that's a fine trailer, Spiderfan, but for me, THIS is the ultimate Superman trailer, from all those years ago. This is the follow up to that brief teaser trailer I posted, the one Django referred to.

Jaws had been huge, so had Star Wars, and you could just feel the studios were starting to up the ante, trying to top each other.

I remember getting chills from watching this. It REALLY got me excited for the Donner film.
It had quite an impact on an impressionable kid who had grown up on the Superman myth.
It's "of it's day", but it still worked.

The Ultimate Superman Trailer from 1978

It still gets to me.

Part of what makes this trailer so great, is that John William's score was ready for the trailer! That was the first time we got to hear that music!
