I think it works very well- it doesn't sell it as an outright comedy (outside the context of the cast) but more of an action fantasy flick with humor.

Which is just about right. It's very difficult for me to see the full-comedic angle to the movie because, as a kid in the 80's, this was stuff to be taken seriously. Sure you found the characters goofy and funny (and, not having seen SNL, Caddyshack and other casts' previous films at that age for context, it wasn't naturally assumed), but you took it pretty straight, especially since some of the ghostly scenes are still pretty scary even today (Devil Dogs in particular).

When I had the opportunity to catch the movie a few years ago in a theater in NYC (the best possible place to see this movie) while at school (a school only like 2 blocks away from the actual GB firehouse, as it turned out), it was an entirely different experience and a lot more lines and scenes previously taken seriously were far more comedic.

Still, I can't take the movie as an outright comedy, so the trailer aligns well with that perception.

2ndQuest, isn't it interesting to compare childhood impressions and memories with adult perceptions? I recently commented in another thread that one of my most beloved sci-fi TV series from my childhood now looks practically absurd and poorly done when viewed through the lens of adulthood.

Yep. I can't count how many times I rented Superman IV as a kid. I later apologized to my parents in the 90's. wink

It works, but more as a trailer for a supernatural action movie, that a paranormal comedy.

I can't begin to describe how much I love this movie. The 25th Anniversary Celebration so far has been a real treat as a fan.

YOu wouldn't need to sell the film as a comedy when you have comedic heavyweights of the day like Murray, Aykroyd and Moranis as headlining features. Its a wonderful blend of drama, horror and comedy and the trailer reflects that. So it makes sense to try to sell the film as suspenseful horror/action that has a sense of humour rather than a comedy that has some scary bits. The opening bit is particularly interesting to me, juxtaposing Janine taking their first call and various freaky shots from the Grey Lady in the library, setting the feeling that despite the fact this will be a comedy there will be some genuinely scary elements. I couldn't watch the Grey Lady or the Possesion of Dana with sound until I was 8 years old, it scared me that much (interesting since they had to redesign the Grey Lady to be less frightening in her transition). From that opening we transition into the familiar theme and one of the most iconic entrances for one of the most iconic vehicles in film history.

From here its pretty generic nothing really impressive IMO. But I am really appreciative that they don't give away any of the iconic Ghosts: Gozer, Stay Puft, The Onion Head (later known as Slimer). I am like that as usually those would be the selling points of the film, the effects and ghouls that the studio would lean on for merchandising and general appeal, but smartly they left all those elements a surprise for movie goers. Good move IMO.

Interesting to note that once again this is a trailer that includes footage not featured in the film. I get the feeling thats probably the result of many takes, as the TV version of the film includes alternate versions of the theatrical cut (usually to eliminate material not appropriate for TV).

As a side tangent, from I have been told most people didn't see the actual trailer for some time. The first announcement of the film was this commercial, with a real phone number that would connect you to an automated message telling you about the film.

Interesting you would state this while discussing Ghostbusters. The cartoon will forever be my most loved childhood staple, but man some of those episodes are just painful to sit through. Fortunately the score kicks in every so often and that warm feeling of nostalgia washes over me again.

I can't remember seeing this trailer as kid, but seeing it now, it definitely looks dated.

However, as a kid then and as a much older kid now, it still looks like a comedy. I would associate Ghostbusters with an real Sci-Fi or Fantasy elements. I mean, the little bit when they blast the hotel housekeeping cart. Also the Ghostbusters logo is pretty funny.

The dialogue and tone of the trailer is pretty comedic to me.

I tend to agree with you now that I think more about it, but when you think action, who ya gonna call? Ivan Reitman? He's been a pure comedy director for his whole career.

As a purist, I always sort of find that annoying when trailers do that. not_talking
YMMV.

As a Ghostbusters Nerd I always enjoy seeing more material, especially when Venkman is talking. Some of the cut material that I have seen shows an interesting difference in character on occasion, and how certain takes could be so radically different in tone and meaning simply with a few more lines or different reads of existing lines. I always find that fascinating, especially when you take into consideration how much of the movie was these three guys trying to find their character, and how much of their characters were shaped in the edit.

I missed commenting on Dr. Strangelove - that's one of the greatest trailers I've ever seen. Utterly frenetic and totally weird.

I see more comedy in both the Batman and the Ghostbusters trailers than most seem too; I'm not sure why. I definitely get a campy vibe from the Batman trailer; campier than the movie is actually. Until the end at least, when the Elfman score kicks in and Nicholson buttons the trailer up with a little menace.

The Ghostbusters one is . . . odd. I'm not sure I would have gone to see that movie.

I've never seen another trailer quite like it.

That surprises me. Whether one interprets that trailer as a paranormal comedy OR a supernatural action movie, at minimum it is interesting and intriguing.

It definitely made me want to see Ghostbusters.

A thumbs up from Zaz, always a good sign.

Moving on to a thriller from the 70s...

Marathon Man 1976

Is it good? Is it effective? Above all, is it safe?

What's your opinion?

VERY effective trailer. It doesn't tell you anything about the plot, but then it doesn't need to, not when they star dropping words like Nazis, diamonds and CIA.

Quite true. Plus, having the star power of Dustin Hoffman, Roy Scheider (especially mid seventies) and Sir Laurence Olivier in your trailer doesn't hurt when it comes to getting the attention of the audience.

This is a really solid trailer for a great movie. What I like about it is that the trailer isn't constructed in any real order in and of itself. The trend nowadays seems to be 3 minute versions of the movie itself, cut in the order of dramatic events as they appear in the film.

The "Marathon Man" trailer is almost chaotic in nature, and I think it sells the film well.
