Well it's been known for a while Jon Favreau is going to direct the Iron Man movie. Well Tony Stark/Iron Man has been cast. It's none other than Robert Downey Jr.

I'm not too familar with the Iron Man character so I can't say whether or not this is a good choice. But it's certainly wasn't exepected. And despite his troubles Downey is a fantastic actor.

At least he'll have some good background for the character.

i wonder how much of a factor that was or if it was at all in Favreau's decision to go with him

Did anyone see A Scanner Darkly? His performance in that is the greatest.

I'd imagine there was some of that involved.
Just hope it doesn't backfire on them. Getting thrown in jail while filming a weekly series is one thing. He gets canned again while shooting a multi-million dollar movie and that turns into something quite different.

I haven't heard the latest on the guy, but isn't he supposed to be all cleaned up now? I know that doesn't mean much in his business but still.
One thing Downey could acurately portray is a man with personal demons so I think this is a good choice. I'm starting to become intrigued with this

Hate the director. All of his movies are so bland. Zathura was a huge dissapointment.

Downey is amazing...and he's been clean for a few years, so lets not get all cynical

Downey Jr. is a brilliant actor whose brilliance has always been overshadowed by his personal life. I dont know about him as Tony Stark though. His roles always are either paranoia, angst, low-life or a combination of any or all three. The angst part will work well with Stark.

I think this is an interesting choice. Downey is probably one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood when he has his head on straight. Heck, he's pretty darn good when he's loaded from what I gather. Creatively I think it could be a good pick, but you kind of wonder in the back of your mind how smart it is to pin your first independently produced superhero movie on a guy with a very erratic past.
As for Iron Man, I was never a huge Iron Man guy as a kid. Most of my exposure to him was through Spider-Man crossovers. I think the possibilities of what they could do with the costume could make him look like pretty awesome though.

Not my first choice, or any choice but after seeing scanner darkly, i think it can work. Next question, will he go with the stach or the goatee?

I'm surprised but I can't say I dislike the choice. Great actor and well, he certainly relates to Stark in more than one way.
