I know better than to think a prequel is a good idea. I suspect Rowling does, too. But she may not be able to help herself.

I would positively die for a prequel. I would love to read about James, Sirius and Remus.

J.K. really shouldn't write a prequel, going by the short story. I know its not supposed to be professional, but the writing is less than perfect. Alot less.
It was a fun read though.

Yeah, I'd rather she left a prequel alone. I assume she'll give more background details when the encyclopedia comes out, that's enough for me.

I'm watching the Goblet of Fire movie on TV right now, and I just can't help but think that this movie/book seems the most disjointed from the series. It's almost as if the whole story, besides Voldmort's rebirth and Ron's relationships with Harry and Hermione, is completely self-contained to this book.
-The Crouch family story looked like it would continue to be of importance after all the focus it got in #4, but it just disappears.
-Barty Crouch Jr. is shown to have taken part in the torture of the Longbottoms, but after this book Bellatrix Lestrange is given all the credit, and even the other Lestranges are forgotten.
-We also never see what exactly happened to Crouch Jr, what exactly a Dementor's Kiss does. Does it have the same effects as death, or does the person basically become a living Inferi?
-Dementors and the Dementor's Kiss was built up a lot, and while not disappearing, they do not really feature in the story or resolution as much as it seemed they would.
-Wormtail is also basically useless after this book, and his life debt to Harry, while paying off in the end, isn't as significant to the story as it seemed it would be. It really would have been better off if Sirius and Lupin had just killed Wormtail that night, it seems.
I can't be certain, but I wonder if during the writing of the Goblet of Fire Jo Rowling might have altered the overall storyline and slightly changed the direction of the books, early enough that everything still makes sense overall but late enough that you can almost tell she discarded some of her future plans for some characters and story elements.
We know she planned it all out, and I'm not doubting that, but I think she made some changes here. She's admitted to changing some things too, like how Mr. Weasley was originally going to die in the snake attack to make Ron grow up faster, or how Hermione was at first going to have a sister, or Ron have an evil cousin, or that Lupin and Tonks were originally going to survive the series.
I'm thinking she did some major rethinking on the series during or after this book. Does anyone else see this, or is it just me?

Some things are dropped rather quickly. We don't really know whether BC jr. actually contributed to the torture of the Longbottoms, though he is definitely a Death Eater. The movie, in one its few good points, has him present at the Riddle House, which helps make the plot a little more explicable.
But the movie is really a dire adaptation; Mike Newell can do comedy but his pacing and the staging in action scenes is really lacking, and in dramatic scenes, non-existent. The Yule Ball is painful. The introduction of the other schools is like a bad musical. The horrid adaptation of the graveyard scene--one of the most exciting scenes in the books--turned me off this movie forever, as well as the ridiculously overscaled tasks--the first in particular. Fiennes, who should have been perfect as Voldemort, is not even close, and I blame the direction. (His appearance at the train station in OOTP is far better).

I found the little snippet from the prequel interesting and funny and very amusing , but I'd rather not see an official prequel. The series is done and over with and I'd prefer to have it like that, with the exception of the encyclopedia.

I know I'm behind the rest of the world, but I just finished reading Deathly Hallows. I came into the Harry Potter world a little late and started reading the series about 9-10 months ago. I've seen read all the books and seen the first 4 movies.
I am a huge fan of the books, but with each movie I see, I come away a little disappointed.

Zaz, you actually just said exactly how I feel about GoF. Right down to Voldemort being far superior in the next film.

Well, you surprise me. Most people here love GOF. But perhaps because I had the graveyard scene paced out in my mind--I felt I knew how it would look--the movie was a terrible disappointment. It was so rushed and they staged it atrociously. I also got the impression that the First Task was directed by the technical people, because it smacked of a standard action scene in a standard fantasy movie. Little or no distinction.
