Yup. From what I read in a recent Entertainment Weekly a couple of studios are fighting over the rights, so this is years away from release at the earliest.

Agreed. By the time all the legal crap is settled and the production gets organized, it probably be more like 2008 or 2009 before we actually get this movie. That's why PJ decided to go ahead with King Kong, The Lovely Bones and Halo. He knows its going to be awhile before he can tackle The Hobbit, so he's going ahead with his other projects.

At this point, I don't really care if it's only being started in 2007. I just want the movie to be out! I've waited for it ever since people started petitioning New Line Cinema to make it.

Yeah this would not be released in 2007. They're not even in pre-production on this. It would be released in like 2009 if it started pre-production in 2007.

I'd like to see it made, have mixed feelings about Jackson, though. On the one hand, I think he' do a great job with the effects, plus he'd be able to get MCKellen to come back as Gandalf. On the other hand, the tone of the Hobbit is quite different from LOTR, far more of a childrens' book. Given that Jackson gave LOTR quite a 'horror' treatment at times, not sure if he'd be right for capturing the tone of the Hobbit.

Agreed. Jackson's flaw was that he tried to turn Rings into an action film

As far as I know there's been a huge deal over this between MGM and New Line Cinema. I don't know who has the rights to it, but they've talked to PJ's representatives and of course I know I heard somewhere that Jackson's been wanting to do it.
Also, as other's have said, it's more then likely a production date for 2007 as Jackson is already working on Halo (in which he says will not suck).

Actually Jackson's next project he will personally direct is the film of "The Lovely Bones"which he is apparently fully commited to. "The Hobbit" will have to wait for a while if Jackson is to do it.
He is functioning as a Exec Producer only on "Halo" and that is not really the deal buster.

As I said im my last post. I think he realized fairly quickly that resolving the legal issuse regarding The Hobbit is going to tack some time, so he decided to go ahead with his other projects. And yes, I realize that he's not actually directing Halo, but between that and The Lovely Bones, he doesn't really have time for anything else at the moment, anyway.
