Be warned, those who may know the musical version of Wicked but not the book, and vice versa- aside from the characters, they are two different animals. The book is very dark, as is its sequel, Son of a Witch. I would take a child to see the musical, but I wouldn't let them touch the novel until they were well into their teen years.
For those who know the book but not the show, Glinda's role is increased. The majority of the first part of the book(Elphaba's childhood) is not in the show. And the ending is completely different.
Both have their good(and bad) sides, though.
Speaking about the original book, when it comes to film versions, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz contains a lot of elements from the book with obvious Muppety twists. The Cap of the Winged Monkeys is there, as are the four witches, the poppy field, and the different ways Oz appears to Dorothy and the gang. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't flat out copy the classic version.

i've also seen a horrible version with all black actors. mind you, not because they were black, that just seemed to be the whole point of the exercise.

if you mean that old musical, then I couldn't agree with you more.
I would like to see a Wizzard of Oz film, that is true to the novel.
i'm so desperate I've even been begging on the asylum forums...

You must be talking about The Wiz, which is a musical about The Wizard of Oz with an all African-American cast. Now don't get me wrong, like darth_frared said, there's nothing wrong with having an all-black cast, it's the material that was horrible. I've read the libretto and heard some of the songs and it was highly embarrassing. Supposedly there will be a revival on Broadway, but I really hope not.

I liked the song for the Wicked Witch..."Don't Bring Me No Bad News"
But yeah, a generally terrible movie, esp. Diana Ross (!!!!) as Dorothy.

Ray Bolger was an amazing talent.
I read the Wizard of Oz novel a very, very, very long time ago when I was a little kid. I don't remember too much about it except for a scene where a bunch of bees attacked them and the Tin Man killed them all with his axe or something. I also read the sequel that involved the Tin Man's origins, though I completely forget everything about it.

the russians boasted their very own frank l. baum in the person of alexander melentyevich wolkow. don't ask me why, but he retold the story and then came up with a whole host of stories surrounding oz, which in those books isn't called oz. so i've never actually read the baum book.

There was one in 1985--not a musical, but I didn't see it. Called "Return to Oz" starring Faruiza Balk.

I read an adaptation of Return to Oz and it was just way over the top dark. As I recall Dorothy was getting instutionalized at the beginning because everyone thought she was crazy for talking about Oz all the time.
Yes, you heard right; Aunt Em was putting Dorothy in an asylum. Weird.

I never read the sequels, and I have no desire to. Sequels can ruin a good thing.
I hated the darkness of the book Wicked, but the musical was happy and had a good end, so I was pleased (and obsessed with the soundtrack for a few months).

I got fascinated by Oz books not through the Judy Garland musical or the 80s sequel but the 80s Japanese anime adaptations which was quite popular over here. It adapted the Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz and The Emerald City of Oz into 52 episodes. The first book was adapted accurately although the other three weren't e.g. Dorothy was in the The Marvelous Land of Oz arc.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
This is the story of a poor young woman whose family discovers that they are descended from an old noble family. Her father sends her to the wealthy branch of the family to try to sell the title for money. However, they are actually not related (the matriarch's husband bought the land) and Tess is seduced (or raped, depending on the interpretation -- Hardy left it somewhat ambiguous) by her son, Alec. She escapes from him and reyurns home, where she bears a child, Sorrow, who soon dies.
Two years later, she leaves her family and becomes a milkmaid. There, she makes the aquaintance of Angel Clare, and they fall in love. However, when she tells him about Alec and Sorrow on their wedding night, he gets furious and leaves.
In the end, she becomes Alec's mistress to save her family from starvation. When Angel, realizing his mistake in leaving her, returns, Tess kills Alec and joins him. They run away and hide, but they are found, and Tess is executed.

I hate Hardy. He's very depressing.

Hardy had very little sentimentality, that's for sure. Perhaps too little.

In a modern context, Tess seems very silly. Naming her daughter 'Sorrow'? Come on, Hardy. I read Tess, but couldn't get myself to like or care about the protagonist.
