I always found the ads full of Joe and other camel-people to be borderline disturbing. Especially the chick camel people. tongue

I really can not decide on Joe Camel... I guess influential means good bad or indifferent..???? In some ways I think they are building the list with names based more on if you would recognize them then there true value as a influential part of society.

Still to me I really do not think tv adds lead to kids smoking as much as watching your favorite movie star smoke, the big brother, or the parent smoke... or even other adults or older kids.. a child will see it as a sign of growing up... ask your self just how many kids smoked who's parents didn't. Cutting out the adds on tv did not have much effect IMO in cutting down kids from smoking as did the negative adds and such did and removing it from main stream television shows and movies. Generally as a kid when the establishment tells you not to do something you see a lot of adults doing you are going to want to do it or try it...

I agree that the people in a kid's life have more power than the advertisers, but I still find the whole Joe Camel campaign ethically disgusting because, whatever they tried to say, it was nothing more and nothing less than an overt attempt to sell smoking to underage kids. And whether it worked or not, that's a screwed up thing to do.

I don't really disagree that much with what your saying, but I think the main influence of Joe Camel is for the kid to buy a Camel rather then say a virginia slim...

not that it really maters.. my Grandfather smoked and died of throat cancer at a ripe age of 93.. my parents and I do not smoke..

Well, discussion was still running when I moved a while back, and I just recently got Internet access in my apartment, so the hiatus went into effect. Expect regular updates from now on.

77: Dick Tracy
Category: Crime
In a nutshell: Yellow-coated detective from the comic strips.
What the book says: "Tracy has always led the way for law enforcement and communications technology. In 1946, an inventor in the strip, Diet Smith, gave Tracy a two-way wrist radio that he upgraded in 1964 to a two-way wrist TV; and in 1986 he traded that in for a two-way wrist computer."
What I say: I don't see where they're going here. Most of the entry explains the types of adventures Tracy has had, and the rest is about how popular he's been. Can't say that I agree with his inclusion.

Most people under forty couldn't tell you who Dick Tracy is. So I don't see this one at all.

Popular, absolutely. Well-known, yeah. But the only real influence I can think of for Tracy is within the pulp sub-genre.

I thought everybody knew who Dick Tracy was.

I know who Dick Tracy is, and may be projecting this onto others.

Or maybe Canada just hates Dick Tracy.

These are my theories.

Well, I saw an old comic lying around in a school library last year. But I've never actually read any of it...
