d. Not more influential than Superman or Peter Pan. Most people my age don't even know about Dallas.

I think JR Ewing did more damage to the image of american business overseas than we can even estimate.

I'm not sure about the thinking behind the choice...I don't have the book.

I'll shove Forcefire next time I see him.
J.R.'s death was a great publicity event, but Superman needs to be far, far, far higher on this list.

Next: Nancy Drew.
I'm betting most people on this forum have no clue whatever who Nancy Drew is.
From Wiki: "Nancy Drew is a fictional character, the heroine detective of a popular mystery series. The series was created and outlined in detail in 1930 by Edward Stratemeyer, founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, with the first manuscripts written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson and edited by Stratemeyer's daughter Harriet Stratemeyer Adams. The Stratemeyer Syndicate had a strict non-disclosure contract; writers such as Mildred Benson produced books based upon outlines provided by the Syndicate. As a ghostwriter, Benson produced the first seven volumes, and then volumes eleven through 25. She also wrote the original draft of volume thirty."
The girl detective, in other words. The series was written by a syndicate of staff writers. The masculine equivilent was "The Hardy Boys".

I forgot. *writes self a note*
I thought Nancy Drew was fairly widely known. It got a movie treatment recently. I'd wager that growing up on Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys inspired more than a few future mystery writers.

61: Uncle Sam
Category: Americana
In a nutshell: He wants you.
What the book says: "Uncle Sam, the personification of our country, is the most readily recognized figure around the globe, the one most often burned in effigy by our enemies from Damascus to Jakarta."
What I say: This is definitely a strong choice for the list, and I'd think about a more prominent placement than 61 if it were mine.
And I should note that the authors of the book have declared that their intent was to do this list from an American point of view. Lucky thing, really, I think they would have messed up a list based on the whole world even more than this one.

Library of Congress posted: However, the term "Uncle Sam" is of somewhat obscure derivation. Historical sources attribute the name to a meat packer who supplied meat to the army during the War of 1812--Samuel (Uncle Sam) Wilson (1766-1854).
Apparently the joke among the solders was that the "U.S." on the meat packages referred to Uncle Sam rather than United States.
I'd agree that this is actually a solid pick, and could easily be higher than 61.
I also found it interesting that the famous (and oft parodied) poster is a parody of sorts itself.

59. Helen of Troy
"Was this the face that launched a thousand ships,
and burnt the topless towers of Ilium"
Supposedly the Trojan War was actually about trade, but what fun is that?
Essentially Helen is another Eve (or perhaps Lilith) figure--the woman who tempts men to betray themselves and other.

Apparently when they made the movie Troy, they initially thought of never showing Helen because she was so iconic. Given that they then settled on Diane Kruger, I have to think the first idea was the better one, but then it would have been even better if they'd not shown the whole movie based on the same logic.
